=== OLS (Ottawa Linux Symposium) ===
JesseKeating points out in his blog[1],
"This tutorial will cover the tools that Fedora uses to make releases,
both the choose your own adventure CD/DVD release and the various Live
images. We'll explore some of the underlying technologies and tools
and why things are done the way they are. Hopefully at the end of the
tutorial people will be confident in making their own "spin" of
Fedora, or something based on Fedora. A good time should be had by
all."

=== Fluendo, Bastien, et al ===
KarstenWade points out in his blog[1],
"Even though it is rather late to try fixing this situation, that
doesn't mean a good enough solution can't be worked up. There are
updates to packages, maybe even a zero-day fix, if we can't get better
changes to ship with Fedora 9. Rather than asking the Board to
"reverse its decision", please join us on fedora-advisory-board to
figure out what is the right thing to do."

=== Desktop User Guide (Needs help to finish it off) ===
MarcWiriadisastra points out in his blog[1],
"The link is above if you are wondering what I'm on about. With
recent changes on how to contribute this is your opportunity to get in
with a lower barrier. Join up with the docs group or just message me
I'm more than happy to walk you through getting involved."

=== OpenExpo 2008 - Day 2 ===
FabianAffolter points out in his blog[1],
"The second day started as busy as the first one. I guess this was
basically because the talk of Alan was the first one of the day.
Everybody wanted to listen to his talk. 20 min before he started most
seats in the room were already occupied. 10 min before the start there
was no more standing room. 5 min later there was a 2 m long queue in
front of the door. For us this was perfect because our booth was not
far away from the door and so were able to grab all visitors who
haven't found a seat."

=== OpenExpo 2008 Berne ===
There have been many reports posted to the Ambassador mailing list and
Ambassador blogs covering OpenExpo 2008 Berne by FabianAffolter,
JoergSimon and SandroMathys. The event was very successful and well
covered in these reports. Fabian posted a collection of all the
reports to the mailing list[1] and his blog[2].

=== Fedora Day 2008 - Buenos Aires, Argentina ===
PabloBarrera announced Fedora Day 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina on
May 10th on the Ambassador mailing list[1]. The news was also
released on the http://www.proyectofedora.org web site[2] in Spanish.

=== Fedora Events Budget ===
FAmSCo announced the new Fedora Events Budget to the Ambassador
mailing list[1]. The summary points of the announcement are:
* Fedora has an increased Event budget this year.
* FAmSCo need any events that need funds during the second quarter
(June 2008 to August 2008) to be added to the Fedora Events page no
later than May 1st, 2008.
* If a Fedora Ambassador receives funds for an event there will be
reporting requirements which include blog postings to Fedora Planet, a
summary report to the Ambassadors mailing list and a metrics based
report to FAmSCo.

== Infrastructure ==
In this section, we cover the Fedora Infrastructure Project.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure
Contributing Writer: HuzaifaSidhpurwala
=== Rename cvsextras during FAS2 switch? ===
WarrenTogami writes[1] on fedora-infrastructure-list,
Warren proposed that during the move to FAS2, we rename cvsextras as
packager as this is a good opportunity to do so as everything will be
down anyway. However in the end since no one claimed the ownership of
this task it did not get done.
[1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-infrastructure-list/2008-March/msg...
=== another issue to fix with the FAS2 switch: Kojis ssl certificate ===
TillMaas writes[2] on fedora-infrastructure-list,
Because of the switch to FAS2 everyone will need to change their
passwords any how, therefore this is a good chance to deploy the new
koji certificate the ticket[3] for which is open for 7 months now.
Dennis commented that this should not be done because it will break
user certs. At the end of the thread MikeMcGrath commented that this
involves a lot of work and has a high potential for breakage and
annoyance for everyone and the benefit to most people is not clear.

[3] https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-infrastructure/ticket/88
=== FAS2 ships! ===
MikeMcGrath reports[4] on fedora-infrastructure-list,
FAS2 has gone online now. Mike made a note that if your user gets
deleted or removed from a group
your home directory may get removed (moved to /tmp/fedora until
tmpwatch gets it) This may have happened to your home directory
during the migration.

== Artwork ==
In this section, we cover Fedora Artwork Project.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork
Contributing Writer: NicuBuculei
=== Nodoka GTK+ Theme ===
MartinSourada posts[1] on the Fedora Art List a status update for
Nodoka[2], Fedora's default GNOME theme (GTK+, Metacity, GNOME
metatheme). It contains a number of bug fixes and improvements and is
released just in time for the Beta release.

[2] https://fedorahosted.org/nodoka/
=== Sulfuric Waves ===
With the deadline for theming Round 3, more and more pieces of the
Waves theme[4] fall into place in a polished state: GRUB splash[1],
RHGB[2], Firstboot[3].

[4] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/F9Themes/Waves
=== Admission policy in the FAS2 Art group ===
With the migration to the new Account System[3] we can mange easily
the accounts and groups, so MairinDuffy notices a large number of
inactive people in the Art group and propose[1] a policy for new
admissions. Everyone agrees, JeffSpaleta even sketches[2] a succession
of steps.

[3] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/AccountSystem
=== Wiki Migration ===
MikeMcGrath, from Fedora Infrastructure, asks[1] about the specific
needs of the Art project in the light of the proposed Wiki migration
to Mediawiki. MairinDuffy mention a Gallery2 plugin for Mediawiki
integration, IanWeller offer his experience with Mediawiki and
NicuBuculei asks a lot of questions about additional possible uses of
Gallery2 and insists of the built-in gallery features offered by
Mediawiki.

== Security Week ==
In this section, we highlight the security stories from the week in Fedora.
Contributing Writer: JoshBressers
=== Browser makers focus on beating malware ===
This is a rather interesting story about some of the new features we
can expect to see in the next generation of browsers:
http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11508
As bad as security is in some areas, it's nice to see the browser
market taking proactive steps about the problems. Most people just
take their browser for granted, but it's probably one of the most
complicated pieces of software they run, and its primary purpose is to
process untrusted third party content in a safe manner. This is not
an easy thing to do right. For the most part they do a great job of
this.

Announcing the relaunch of the Fedora BugZappers!
by Jon Stanley
Building on the recent success of the recent "gcc43 rebuild triage
effort", we are pleased to announce the official re-launch of the
Fedora Bug Triage Process!
Are you frustrated, because you would like to help to Fedora
community, but you couldn't write a line of code if your life depended
on it? You don't feel qualified to help with the Art project, and you
can't translate documentation?
Do not despair. Anyone can be a bug triager. No special education or
background is required in order to triage bugs. You do not even have
to know anything about programming!
Bug triagers are the first line of defense for Fedora developers. We
strive to make it easy for developers to focus on bugs that are worth
their precious time (so that hopefully they will have more time for
resolving your bugs :-)). We do this by performing simple tasks like
requesting additional information to clarify reported problems and
verify that the bug is filed correctly, and verifying the bug is not a
duplicate of one already filed.
Have you ever reported a bug, but been frustrated because no one
responded to it? Have you ever been annoyed by having your bug closed
without ever receiving a single reply?
Are you looking for a meaningful way to contribute to Fedora that does
not require you to be a developer or package maintainer? Do you have
a genuine desire to help people? Do you want to learn more about a
particular component within Fedora?
If so, then the triage team is for you!
There are two ways to get started. If you already feel comfortable
triaging bugs you can start today by following the instructions at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/GettingStarted
If you'd prefer a little training first, we are in the process of
arranging some online training sessions and are waiting for people to
specify the time that works best for them. We are planning to conduct
sessions at various times that work for people. If you are already a
Fedora contributor with wiki edit access, add your name to
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/Training.
If you are do not yet have wiki edit access, here are four different
ways to make contact with us:
1) Create a wiki account by following the instructions here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/WikiEditing#Getting_Edit_Access and add
your name to the wiki.
2) Subscribe to fedora-test-list(a)redhat.com at
https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-test-list and mention
on the list that you are interested in attending a triage training
session along with a preferred day and time.
3) Stop by #fedora-qa IRC channel on the Freenode server
(irc.freenode.net). Someone is usually around that will be glad to
help you get set up.
4) Come to our weekly IRC meeting on #fedora-meeting. Our current
meeting schedule is here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/Meetings
To show an example of what Fedora bug triagers do consider a recent
project when we made a noticeable impact by triaging bugs for the
mass-rebuild of packages using GCC 4.3. Not sure what GCC is? No
problem. Suffice it to say that the entire collection of packages
compiled with GCC (the C compiler used in Fedora) had to be rebuilt
for a new version coming out in Fedora 9. Five hundred forty two
individual source packages failed to rebuild automatically for one
reason or another. The triage team reduced this to approximately 160
source packages that were true "failure to compile" errors. The other
packages had different problems that were unrelated to the compiler.
This first sweep by the triage team helped save release engineering
and the package maintainers time, by seeing that the bugs got put in
the right place.
There are lots of opportunities to make a noticeable difference as a
bug triager. Come join us!

In this section, we cover a highlight of Planet Fedora - an
aggregation of blogs from world wide Fedora contributors.

Contributing Writers: ThomasChung
=== Bonnie in Laurinburg ===
AlexMaier points out in her blog[1],
"Both car and driver survived the two-day event mostly unscathed,
which can't be said about a whole bunch of cones we hit. Here you see
Bonnie sporting the numbers and the Fedora sponsorship on the second
day. Click on the picture to see a few more from the set."

=== RSS feeds of bugs! ===
JonStanley points out in his blog[1],
"Just figured that I'd point out here that to assist in bug triage,
I've made some Feedburner feeds of new Bugzilla bugs - a shout out to
Bill Nottingham for giving me the idea."
[1] http://jons-thoughts.blogspot.com/2008/03/rss-feeds-of-bugs.html
=== Howto: Test the WebKit engine in Fedora ===
RolandWolters points out in his blog[1],
"WebKit is a browser engine which was once forked from KHTML by Apple.
Nowadays it is developed by the WebKit project where Apple still has
quite some weight, but others are in the boat as well: Trolltech,
Nokia, Adobe, some KDE developers, some GNOME developers, etc.
Besides, WebKit will be part of the upcoming Qt 4.4, will play an
important role in KDE's Plasma and can also be used as a backend in
GNOME's Epiphany browser."

=== Hints for making Evolution faster ===
JesseKeating points out his blog[1],
"I've had a long battle with evolution and it's speed. Particularly
opening imap folders and checking for mail. However somebody recently
clued me into a (new?) setting that has sped my evolution use up quite
a bit."

== Marketing ==
In this section, we cover Fedora Marketing Project.

=== Interview with Max Spevack and Paul Frields ===
JonathanRoberts advertised [1] that he "did an interview with
MaxSpevack and PaulFrields that has gone online today. I think it
reads really well and makes the future prospects of the project sound
very exciting...You can read it here [2]"

=== Linux Powers The Spiderwick Chronicles ===
MohdIzharFirdaus pointed out [1] "During the production of Spiderwick,
Tippett Studio switched to Fedora Linux running on Macintosh desktops.
"We currently have 119 Intel-based Apple Mac Pro workstations running
Linux", says Tippett Computer Graphics Supervisor Russell Darling. "We
decided to go with Apple hardware running Linux for our primary artist
workstations on The Spiderwick Chronicles, although it might have been
considered a risky endeavor for a show in production. We initially had
some problems with sound on Maya and a few other minor issues, but
they were resolved. We got a patch from Autodesk that took care of
everything." Commercial Linux software vendors work closely with film
studio clients."
[1] http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-marketing-list/2008-March/msg00018....
=== Name for Fedora Compute Grid Project ===
KarstenWade warned [1] "Recently under discussion on f-a-b is the idea
of creating a million-node compute grid using Condor and other tools.
This might include, for example, the ability to join the grid during
firstboot. Catch up on that thread here [2]. We are suffering from a
cool name; we are in danger of calling it "Fedora Home" in the
meantime, and with one pick-up of that name in Fedora Weekly News,
someone is going to come pressing trademark rights. Shall we declare
it a codename in seek of a replacement?
What this thing is:
* A cool piece of technology with a grid client and Fedora-run grid master
* A way to contribute to Fedora with spare CPU cycles from your
machine(s); useful for everyone from Web surfing grandmas to kernel
hackers with quad-cores
* A chance to create something that Fedorans can use for good projects:
* Distributed build-system
* Social and technical causes that match with Fedora values/ideals
* Cool research
It's some kind of convergence, which is why it needs a cool name, right?"
JeffSpaleta offered [3] "Okay, assuming we are only going to allow
Fedora clients:
The Fedora Trellis: The 'open' grid supporting Fedora's growth.
If we are going to allow non-Fedora clients I would just call it The
Trellis [4]:
trellis (n) 1. A structure of open latticework, especially one used
as a support for vines and other creeping plants."
PaulFrields declared [5] the name "Trellis" as the winner: "*ding ding ding*".

=== The Effects of Commercialization on Open-source Communities ===
RahulSundaram reported [1] of an entry in Matt Asay's blog on CNET,

=== Recap of Fedora Marketing Meeting on 6 March ===
GregDeKoenigsberg posted [1] that we "discussed the Marketing Plan
document and made some modifications to the copy currently on the
wiki. We discussed Target Audience and Brand Positioning, and our
current thoughts are summed up on the Plan page. [2]
We feel like Target Audience is pretty strong, but we're going to
continue to iterate over Brand Positioning. Once we have that right,
we'll move on to Key Marketing Messages, and then the rest of our
lives as a group will probably be spent refining our Strategies and
Tactics.
Productive discussions, and exciting for people who enjoy the
challenge of communicating The Big Fedora Message. Look forward to
seeing more and more join the discussion over time.
Next meeting: next Thursday [13 March], 2000 UTC. (Note to US
Americans: don't get caught by the time change! We will have the
meeting at 2000 UTC, no matter what that means after we Spring
Forward!)"
Note: The HTML IRC log for the meeting can be found here [3].

=== Some Marketing Tips from Linux Magazine ===
JonathanRoberts stated [1], "I had the opportunity to ask Joe Cassad
from Linux Magazine about how they come across ideas for stories and
articles, and what Fedora can do to make it easier for them to find
stories about Fedora. The most important part of the response I got
was this
Me: In an ideal world, how would you like to go about getting
information about a project like Fedora when trying to find material
for new articles? Essentially, what can Fedora do for you to make your
job easier!?
Joe: I'm not sure where you are on this now, but one thing I have
noticed in the past is that it is difficult to get good documentation
on Fedora until after the release. If I don't get to see a detailed
description of highlights or new features until the release notes
appear, this task of finding good article topics can't start until the
release. It then takes a couple months to get an article and a couple
more months to edit and print the magazine. If there were a way to get
better
documentation before the release, that would help a lot. I don't know
if you're having to content with non-disclosure strategies here, so
maybe this isn't possible.
Me: Do you know about our Feature List [2] page?
Joe: OK. That's useful to know about. I'll watch that list. The
important part is the description. Some of these features have useful
descriptions some are not as easy to understand at a glance.
What do people think? Maybe the SSS could help us here? And the
Feature List could be promoted more/cleaned up by marketing or docs
people?
RahulSundaram replied [3] "Which descriptions don't make sense either
in the summary or after reading the specification. I think these are
fairly good descriptions considering they are essentially developer
specifications."
IanWeller opined [4] "Maybe an official news blog-type-thing, most
likely on the front page, would help get news out to other larger
Linux news sites. (I'm not necessarily sure if this has been
attempted before already.) Are press releases also an option?"
JeffSpaleta asked [5] "How about this as a compromise....What if we
leave the feature process development driven.. but we hook in a way
for someone who is perusing the feature summaries to easily drop a
comment or a note if they want a layperson explanation. The notes
would go to a marketing group..maybe even this list...an answer is
formulated and sent back to the person who asked the the explanation
and additionally linked in to the feature summary on the feature list
without disturbing the development oriented information there.
This might even be useful in figuring out where the next developer
interview opportunities are. Both could be used when announcements are
made about features, new alphas/betas are available, etc."
KarstenWade posited [6] "+1 ... sort of like a press inquiries
address, but offered as part of an already useful document? That way
we are asking for targeted questions and not inviting wide-open
requests that are mainly covered in the features pages. We could also
find a way to cross-tie the SSS with specific features, so one has a
press-friendly approach and there is a reciprocating link to find the
deeper developer-oriented content."
Karsten continued [7] regarding an official news site:
"news.fedoraproject.org is in the works, mainly for just that job."
Concerning press releases, he said "Yes, but best is press.redhat.com;
it's a blog output, several of us in the Marketing SIG can post to it
as "the Fedora team", and it is watched by a growing number of
technical and other press. It's somewhere I'd "post also", that is,
output a press release to news.fp.o and make sure a copy gets to
press.r.c."

=== FAmSCo Summary ===
FAmSCo worked on the budget process to be used to obtain funds for
events. The initial announcement email has seen its first draft and
should be posted to the Ambassadors mailing list this week.
FAmSCo drafted an informal event reporting guideline. The event
reporting guideline will assist ambassadors with ideas of what to post
in event reports to blogs and mailing lists. It will be posted to the
wiki and announced on the Ambassador mailing list this upcoming week.
FAmSCo has also initiated a wiki cleanup effort for the Ambassador's
section of the wiki. There are numerous outdated pages in our section
of the wiki. The list of pages receiving attention, which will change
over time, has been posted to the wiki [1].
The IRC meeting logs from the FAmSCo meeting on Friday, March 7th have
been posted to the Ambassador the wiki [2].

=== Reinforcing MP3 Patent Issues As A Global Problem ===
With the authorities enforcing MP3/MP4 patents at the recent CeBIT
technology trade-show in Germany, JeffSpaleta had asked[1] whether
news articles related to these media patent enforcements going on
outside of the United States should be added to the CodecBuddy Wiki
page[2]. Sharing this information from the Wiki page would re-enforce
that such patents are a global problem and not limited to the United
States. Jeff's message was greeted by a positive response.

For those contributors that requested a complementary LWN 10th
anniversary account, if you submitted your information prior to March
1st the account should now be setup[1]. There are still 12 available

=== SMG in CVS, ready for post-DocBook conversion edit ===
KarstenWade asked [1] for help with the SMG:
"The Software Management Guide has undergone a bit of a facelift, with
these cool changes:
* Freshly updated content written and edited by Eric 'Sparks'
Christensen; edit and wiki conversion to DocBook XML by Jared Smith
* This checkout is in DocBook but has not been edited for proper
Fedora Docs style:
* At least Paul and I have agreed to have review it
* Chance to watch fedora-docs-commits to learn how and why we do stuff
* Informative CVS commit messages guaranteed or your money back!
* The current development version is available in CVS. [2]
* Module in CVS moved from 'yum-software-management' to reflect new
name and focus
* All current and old bugzilla entries for 'y-s-m' moved to 's-m-g'
* New module owner Eric Christensen, QA eye by Jared Smith

=== Meeting with RH Docs ===
PaulFrields talked [1] "with a couple of folks from the Red Hat
Engineering Content Services (documentation & translation) groups
tonight -- part of a weekly series of meetings, actually. Thanks to
the kind participation of Murray Mc`Allister, we have a splendid
opportunity to see how our toolchain can fit together with Publican,
the RH Docs tool for building documentation. There are probably a few
capabilities we have of which the RH Docs team isn't aware, and some
pain points that may require fixing as well.
I am hopeful that the developer of Publican, Jeff Fearn, will be able
to help out with looking at the FDP toolchain to explore all these
issues, since there aren't many of us here with the combination of the
requisite skills and the time to work on any remaining problems.
Doing this work in the open community is a big win for everyone,
especially since it
will help seed a whole new group of documentation writers and editors
in the FDP. As I told the RH folks, I suspect this is not nearly as
long or arduous a process as it sounds. I also think we'll find not
only a lot of common problems already solved, but ways to improve both
our toolchain and Publican as we go.
Thanks to everyone for your assistance as we explore this opportunity together."

=== The Fedora logo in Black and White ===
The Fedora logo, the Infinity Bubble uses 3 colors: a dark blue, a
light blue and white, which makes it impractical for black and white
use (required for example to keep the printing costs very low), so
MairinDuffy steps in[1] and updates the Logo Usage Guidelines[2] for
this case: "In this scenario, the logotype must be used alone without
the logo mark, in a light color type on a dark background or in a dark
color type on a light background."

== Security Week ==
In this section, we highlight the security stories from the week in Fedora.
Contributing Writer: JoshBressers
=== Improve security with polyinstantiation ===
There is a really good article about using directory polyinstantiation in PAM:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-polyinstantiation/?ca=d...
I hope to see this used by default in an upcoming Fedora release. All
the bits are there, someone just needs to put them together. The
basics are that each user gets their own personal /tmp for example.
This then (mostly) eliminates things like insecure temp file usage
flaws.
=== Evolution or Intelligent Design? ===
A quite serious Evolution critical issue was released last week:
http://secunia.com/advisories/29057/
This issue would allow an attacker to inject arbitrary code into your
evolution process if you view the malformed message. There's not
really a good way to protect against this, as the very nature of email
is to view the messages you receive. Many people got very little
sleep in order to release a timely update for this one.
A big thanks should go out to Secunia for giving everyone a heads up
about this. If you're running Evolution and you've not updated yet,
you should do so.

PaulFrields announces in fedora-announce-list[1],
"The Fedora Board will hold an IRC meeting on Tuesday, 4 March 2008,
at 1900 UTC (2:00pm EST, 11:00am PST). This meeting will NOT be held
in #fedora-meeting, since it is being used by the community at that

process when the Board takes questions or open issues. The length of
the Q&A will depend on availability of the Board members and interest
from the community."

edited with interviewers name and put into the rotation, if someones
interested in doing that (and coming up with other ads for the banner
links) stop by the fedora-websites-list and we'll get you setup."
JonathanRoberts replies [2] "I was already a step ahead of you here :)
I've the sources of the generic interview banner and will be posting
it for use everytime a new interview comes up. Is the websites list
the best place to drop these when I've got them done?"
Mike responds [3] "You can do that, if you want to get the middle man
out of the way you can apply for the sysadmin and sysadmin-web groups.
That will give you access to alter the banners directly."

=== Fedora NPO founded at FOSDEM in Bruxelles ===
Gerold Kassube announces [1]
"Dear *,
it is a great pleasure for us to share with you the official
announcement of the Fedora EMEA NPO as you can read below:
The idea of improving the way in which Fedora is supported started in
2006, and has been given shape and carefully prepared during the
following year. On February 23rd, 2008, conform German Law and
established in the German district Lörrach, 10 active members of the
European Fedora Community founded a non-profit association called
"Fedora EMEA e.V.".
This foundation increases the possibilities to inform a broader mass
about the Fedora Project and forms a focal point and economic base for
Fedora Project supporters. For companies and other organizations, the
Fedora Project supporters are now organized in a solid, efficient and
transparent way. The foundation reports to the Fedora Project
regularly.
As President of the Board, the members elected Gerold Kassube
(Germany), long-time member of the Fedora Ambassador Team. The members
also elected Jeroen van Meeuwen (The Netherlands), and Fabian
Affolter (Switzerland) to become the organization's Vice-Presidents,
and trusted Robert Scheck (Germany) to manage the foundations assets.
In just a few weeks, during LinuxTag 2008 in Germany, the foundation
has it's first General Members Assembly. Because all parties involved
still have a lot of work to do, the necessary information to support
the organization and membership subscription forms will become
available online in the near future.
On behalf of the Board
Gerold Kassube"
PaulFrields, the new Fedora Project Leader, congratulates [2] the
Fedora EMEA NPO and adds that
"In the future, possibly before the release of Fedora 10, the Board
will begin accepting additional applications from groups that have
reached this advanced stage of planning. We are using Fedora EMEA as
a pilot to figure out a framework for enabling additional worldwide
communities. We chose Fedora EMEA specifically because this group had
already achieved a very high level of organization, community
interest, and command of the details surrounding funding and legality
in their region.
I would urge any additional groups that are considering formation to
reach a similar state of readiness by that time. The Board wants to
ensure that Fedora's community groups worldwide develop consistently,
and with proper resources to enable their success."

=== Meeting on Fedora Marketing Plan ===
GregDeKoenigsberg, Community Development Manager, summarizes [1] the
meeting on the topic of developing a Fedora marketing plan:
"John Adams, of the Red Hat Brand team, has provided us with a
template of what a full Marketing Plan looks like. That templates
lives on the Fedora wiki [2]. We've dramatically simplified our task
list to focus on fleshing out a full marketing plan for Fedora based
on this skeleton. The task list, with owners, can be found here [3]:
Over the next week, the owners of key sections of this Marketing Plan
will be asking questions, making proposals, and filling this plan in,
bit by bit.
If someone asks a question of you on-list -- like "I think that our
target audience for press releases should be X, Y, and Z" -- PLEASE
RESPOND. You're on this mailing list because you care about the
marketing of Fedora, so please take this opportunity to express your
opinions. You folks *are* Fedora. We need to hear you.
Next week we will convene on IRC once again to see what progress we've
made. Details:
Time: Thursday, March 6, 2000 GMT/UTC (3pm Eastern US)
IRC: irc.freenode.net, #fedora-mktg
Thanks to all of today's participants. It's been a while since I led
an IRC meeting, and this one was extremely worthwhile. Let's keep the
momentum going."

=== FAmSCo Summary ===
Work is starting to pick up for FAmSCo starting with a new budget for
the year. Expect to see more announcements to the Ambassadors mailing
list once FAmSCo gets some of the logistics worked out. We have more
money budgeted for events this year than in previous years thank to
the hard work of MaxSpevack. If you have an event coming up be sure
to add it to the Fedora Events page [1] so we are aware of it.
FAmSCo has also been working on determining a good way to gather
reports from the events to help create some metrics to justify the
increased budget. FAmSCo is still determining what types of data we
need to gather and how a standardized report should look. FAmSCo will
announce the results of these talks to the Ambassadors mailing list.

=== What Defines A Fedora Spin? ===
JoshBoyer, on behalf of rel-eng, has asked the fedora-advisory-board
what warrants an official Fedora spin. His question comes with 14
different Fedora spins currently being considered and the massive disk
space each would consume, while the package variation between each
spin is generally minimal. Of course, there are also other factors
involved with each spin such as testing and the bandwidth to serve
these additional files. Specifically, Josh had questioned the need for
localized Fedora spins. There is a variety of feedback to this
question, which can be found in the mailing list[1].

MatthiasClasen ping[1] the Art team about a new small but awesome
features which just landed in Rawhide: multi-resolution animated
backgrounds. So now we can define a background wallpaper in a XML and
it can not only adjust its image according with the time (for example
to reflect the daylight like in F8), but it can also pick the best
suited image size, without the need for manual adjustment from the
user.

=== Which color is Fedora? ===
Following the context of one particular theme proposal for Fedora 9
and its color variations, MartinSourada express his concern[1] about
using another color than the traditional blue in Fedora themes: "As
for the issue of being it blue, well, I don't like very much the idea
of having different colour wallpaper than blue, not only because I
like blue [...], but mostly because I, and many other people, have
Fedora already associated with blue. Yeah, we can experiment with
other colours as well, but as far as we don't want to confuse people
we need blue to be the main colour."
NicuBuculei backs this[2]: "I think blue should be *at least* partly
used, so It could be gray with some secondary blue elements. [...]
Ubuntu is brown, SUSE is green, Fedora is blue", MairinDuffy
consider[3] the user feed-back from users which tend to favor a grey
tone this round and comes with and idea for a nice blue touch.

=== Themes development ===
With Round 3 deadline next week[1], the two remaining themes for
Fedora 9 get final touches:
* LuyaTshimbalanga updates F9 Themes Shoowa[6] with a smooth, curvy
variant[2], a change welcomed by JeffSpaleta
* In the meantime, F9 Themes Sulfuric Waves[7] is on fire
(literally). MairinDuffy add a shade of blue in the form of fire over
the yellow sulfur crystals[3], NicuBuculei[4] and JeffSpaleta[5] play
with their own variants is something which looks like converging to a
consensus.

=== How does Pulseaudio start? ===
This week's ''Wednesday Why'' article[1] discussed how the Pulseaudio
daemon is started as part of a Gnome desktop session. None of the
gnome-session configuration files mention the Pulseaudio daemon, but
it reliably starts whenever Gnome starts, and the output of 'ps' shows
gnome-session to be its parent. The answer to this mystery lies in the
relationship between gnome-session and the legacy esound daemon.

discussed:
"Fedora offers many tools for viewing detailed hardware information,
including lsusb, lspci, hdparm, and direct access to the /proc and
/sys filesystems. ... lshw-gui provides a convenient graphical

Fedora Board IRC meeting 2008-03-04
by Paul W. Frields
Fedora Board IRC meeting, 2008-03-04 - 1900 UTC
------------------------------------------------
The Fedora Board will hold an IRC meeting on Tuesday, 4 March 2008, at
1900 UTC (2:00pm EST, 11:00am PST).
This meeting will NOT be held in #fedora-meeting, since it is being used
by the community at that time.
There will be two IRC channels available on Freenode (irc.freenode.net):
* #fedora-board-public -- this channel can be joined and used by all
community members like any public channel. There will be a moderator
present to take questions and the Board members can watch this channel
as well.
* #fedora-board-meeting -- this channel can be joined and viewed by the
public but only Board members can communicate on it. Here the Board
members will cover an agenda and then take Q&A.
Because we hope for a large turnout, this setup promotes an orderly
process when the Board takes questions or open issues. The length of
the Q&A will depend on availability of the Board members and interest
from the community.
We look forward to seeing community members at the meeting. We also
hope you will enjoy having a look at some of the Board's work, and
encourage you to ask questions.
