Added the following brief report at

We were trying to get more people interested in free s/w and other
issues using new strategies and it seems to have worked. But did not
really try and reach out to schools and colleges. Other events in sync
might have been a good idea.

A poster competition on Women's and LGBT issues was jointly organized
by WFS-India in collaboration with GLUG-Kolkata and Fedora during
03rd--30th June'2013.
This will be one competition that provoked plenty of debate and in my
opinion, exposed the lack of awareness of a wide spectrum of FOSS
contributors and others. The idea was definitely supported by large
sections of the FOSS and many other communities, but some had
reservations.
The original background text in the announcement minced no words:
"India is a backward country in which majority of the people are
illiterate and most of those who are literate have no sex education.
Most of the people are brain-washed by the decadent patriarchy that
has merged itself with cultural, religious and business practices at
the cost of basic human values. Even the country's laws are sub-human
in nature.
It is no wonder that the human rights abuses of women and LGBT people
is the norm. This poster competition is for highlighting various
facets of the problem and possible egalitarian solutions."
The long debates on this started much later and the second revision
said as much. The final version came up later after a meeting on 13th.
We did not have too many submissions though, the number of submissions
were less than the available prizes. So all eligible submissions were
awarded prizes. These were all submitted by the 13th. The extension of
dates, modified 'positive' text and publicity did not help in getting
any new submissions.
The prizes included Live Fedora design and TexLive'2013 in the Flash drives.
The names of the winners are
C. Srividya (2 prizes)
Ani Dalal (1 prize)
All things considered, this stands as a great and successful community effort!
