Hi, you may have heard of Fedorator recently. Miro Hrončok supervised a bachelor thesis whose result was a Fedora USB drive writer box. It's all open source hardware, you can find it at Github: https://github.com/Sanqui/fedorator
The thesis (in English) is here: https://diplomky.redhat.com/grid-file/ serve-file?mongoId=591b657ee4b00455e619aca6&bucket=thesis&save=true
My idea is to organize a workshop at Flock where we would assemble say 10 units and then ambassadors would bring them back to their countries and use at events. Since DVDs are going away it could be a useful addition to event equipment and one of replacements for DVDs.
I'm writing it here to hear opinions of other ambassadors. Do you think it's something worth investing time and money in?

+1 from me. This is a great thing to have available on a Fedora booth.

I read that it was already used on one conference, do you know how many people used it to create a USB device? As an ambassador it sounds like a cool exhibition item to me but I am not sure how many people would actually use it. If people like to use it I could imagine that they would also prefer a USB 3 capable device to make sure it writing the sticks does not take too long but this makes it a little bit more expensive. AFAIK the cheapest USB3 capable board would be a Odroid XU4: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G143452239825
But maybe they would also be interested to sponsor devices if we use them to show at booths...

I've heard that the odroid isn't currently able to run a community kernel. Apparently there are still non-open patches from the vendor. Is this the case?

If I go to Flock, I will be very interested in participate in this hacking. I would like to take the opportunity of being on the US to buy gadgets to built my own. Maybe somebody in the US can help buying some parts for those traveling.
I recall reading from the ideas that it will have a powered hub, so people can charge their phone and talk a little bit. That feature made to the final design?
Best regards
Neville
Hi Neville,
I think that issue/idea can be easily solved if you add a 4-5 USB port charger head, or a implemented plus quickcharger option device. Like this: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1hMAdIFXXXXacXXXXq6xXFXXXD/-font-b-4-b-font-fo... OR this one if you would like to put on a single 4F sticker to top of the ports: http://www.belkin.com//images/productmt/966857/372.jpg

Bex,
Also if design in camera to the box, and monopod, or tripod mounting hole either to the box, that can result a photobooth, or a photomachine at the end of the conference... more better that we have already have photobooth app in python, and we made it for fedora earlier - we only need a menu item integrated into the flashing app.

Z
PS: Hotspot, kiosktool, infopoint, entertainment box, usb media creator, charging station, local chat and meeting box (mote rulez), .... and this is only a few idea...

Sounds like we need someone to take ownership of building out what our initial goals are with this as it seems we have a lot of support for building these for each region. Is v1.0 exactly what the student designed or is it some of these other ideas?
I'd like to see justifications for anything we add so that we don't get feature-rich and usage-poor design.
If we are going to build these at Flock we need to get money allocated and parts purchased so this needs to get done so we can get $$ from the council or have hte regions allocate them.

I'm CC'ing the student because he's the best person to answer the questions and he's not a Fedora ambassador, so he can't subscribe to this mailing list.

How about adding just a quick charge wall plug with micro USB charge cables and adapters to USB-C? For current phones I believe charging with the 500mA from a regular USB hub does not provide the best experience. This could be something that is integrated into the Fedorator case.
