I often get the feeling sometimes the notion of mentoring and
discussions about it get confused by the different ways we use the
term mentoring in the project.

All Fedora ambassadors (at least all good ones) are mentors. Part of
what we do routinely is mentor new Fedora users and contributors. And
at public events like seminars there is a great opportunity for an
ambassador to do just that. Help interested people we encounter find
their place in the Fedora Project. Learn their interests and skills,
give them suggestions and help connecting them with people in places
where those skills can be put to good use.

Another use of the term mentoring is more specific to particular
groups. An ambassador might connect a new contributor who is
interesting in packaging with that area of the project but there would
also be someone to fill the role of mentoring a new packager in the
intricacies and workflows of that area. It might be the ambassador if
he/she has those skills also, or it might be another packager.

My comments above were based on my assumption that we were talking
about mentoring new ambassadors specifically as in the second sense.
Few new people we meet at public events would be really well suited to
the role of ambassador right away. Good ambassadors are familiar with
the project and have experiences in Fedora that go beyond being an
ambassador. Often what happens when we do meet someone we think might
make a good ambassador we discuss the ambassador group with them and
encourage them to come spend time with us to see if it seems like a
good fit from their side too. And if they become serious about it then
they can make a connection with a mentor to help them become an
ambassador themselves.

Please do mentor new people into the project. You are an ambassador
and that is what we do!
