Dear all,
You are kindly invited to the meeting:
SCaLE 23x: RPM Packaging Workshop on 2026-03-06 from 15:00:00 to 16:30:00 America/Los_Angeles
The meeting will be about:
_Part of [Fedora Hatch Day](https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/23x/special-event/fedora-hatch-da… at SCaLE 23x. Presented by [Carl George](https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/speaker/carl-george)_.
The presentation will take place in **Room 208 on Friday, March 6, 2026 - 15:00 PST to 16:30 PST**.
While universal package formats like Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage have gained popularity for their cross-distro support, native system packages remain a cornerstone of Linux distributions. These native formats offer numerous benefits, and understanding them is essential for those who want to contribute to the Linux ecosystem at a deeper level.
In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore RPM, the native package format used by Fedora, CentOS, and RHEL. RPM is a powerful and flexible tool that plays a vital role in the management and distribution of software for these operating systems. During this lab, you will:
- write RPM spec files
- build, inspect, and install RPM packages
- run RPM quality checks to ensure best practices
This workshop is ideal for developers, sysadmins, and engineers who want to understand how native packages are built and maintained. By the end of this session, you'll have the knowledge and confidence to create and maintain RPM packages effectively.
The only prerequisite knowledge for the lab is basic command-line familiarity, such as running commands, editing files, and navigating directories. Attendees must bring their own laptop. All exercises run in a browser-based lab environment, so no specific operating system is required.

Great documentation is the backbone of any successful open source project, but maintaining it at an operating system scale is a massive challenge. To combat contributor burnout and modernize our workflows, the Fedora Council has approved a major [Community Initiative](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/initiatives/) to [revamp the Fedora Docs ecosystem](https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Initiatives/Fedora_Docs_2025).
Our goal is to build a dedicated support team for tooling and empower sub-teams of subject-matter experts to own specific areas of interest. In this highly interactive 25-minute session, we will start with a lightning introduction to our Antora-based toolchain and the progress we’ve made in lowering the technical threshold for new writers. But we won't spend the whole time talking at you. The core of this session is driven by the audience.
As Linux users and open source enthusiasts, we want to know what you care about most—whether it's end-user support, beginner's guides, or getting involved with an open source community. We will crowd-source topics directly from the room and facilitate live breakout discussions around existing Fedora Docs components and where we need to build new ones. Come share your expertise, tell us what documentation you wish you had on day one, and learn how you can influence the future of Fedora's documentation!

Hi!
From Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 of May, the French Fedora community was represented by the Borsalinux-fr association ( https://www.borsalinux-fr.org/ ) at the 26th edition of "les Journées du Logiciel Libre" (Free Software Days in French) in Lyon, France. More informations at https://jdll.org/ (only in french).
In a few numbers:
- just over 1,200 visitors;
- 86 conferences;
- 16 workshops;
- 46 stands.
Behind the Fedora / Borsalinux-fr booth:
* Nicolas BERREHOUC aka Nicosss.
On Saturday and Sunday I talked with many people.
A variety of questions and comments, but always on the same themes as in previous years:
- discovering GNU/Linux distributions and the possibility of using a Live to try them out;
- differences with other distributions;
- discovering the **Fedora Project**;
- discovering **Fedora-Fr** and its French-speaking community;
- discovering the **Borsalinux-fr** association behind **Fedora-fr**;
- Atomic version support on the Fedora-fr Forum;
- how to participate in the Fedora project -> https://whatcanidoforfedora.org/fr/ ;
- the possibility or not of leaving Windows with your current PC, whether it's aging or doesn't meet Windows 11 criteria;
- finding a distribution for parents with no computer skills;
- numerous feedbacks from system administrators who install **Fedora Linux** to benefit from the latest tools;
- confirmation of feedback from previous years that games can be played on **Fedora Linux** without any problems, and that it is therefore not necessary to reboot under Windows;
- positive feedback from users who have been using Fedora Atomic for several years and don't want to go back to anything else;
- thanks for the work done to achieve stable, high-quality distribution;
- thanks for the existence of **Fedora-Fr** with its forum and documentation for the French-speaking community;
- why we still didn't have any goodies with the new logo.
Some media of this year’s event and past editions are available at the link https://jdll.org/presse-et-media and the videos of the 2025 conferences on peertube https://videos-libr.es/videos/browse .
All exchanges are available on https://forums.fedora-fr.org/d/75220-jdll-journ%C3%A9es-du-logiciel-libre-2… (only in french).
Thanks everyone and see you next year in the same place!

Hi Ambassador community. I sent the below email to Fedora contributors who
registered a free ticket for our annual FOSDEM contributor appreciation
dinner last night. However, I also wanted to share it with our wider
Ambassador community because I know there are so many of you who cannot be
with us there in-person, and I want to share some of the community vibes
here with the rest of you. <3

Hi folks. This is your friendly, neighborhood Fedora Community Architect
👋🏻 You are receiving this email because you registered a ticket for the
Fedora & CentOS Contributor Appreciation Dinner at FOSDEM 2025. Don't
worry, you were not added to any mailing lists, but I did want to share
some remarks that I originally planned to give last night during our meal.
A special thanks goes to CentOS Connect and sponsors for their support in
making shared community experiences like this happen. Our contributor
appreciation dinner is a special tradition in Brussels. It is always one of
the most memorable community moments of the year for me. I enjoy it most
because I love seeing our community come together, "break bread", and share
our stories and wisdom with each other. And of course, eat yummy food!
Even though we had a great dinner last night, I know a lot of people are on
edge. There is no shortage of headlines grabbing our collective attention.
The world we live in right now feels divided. In many ways, this is new.
But in our Fedora community, division is actually nothing new. Although I
like to think of our "division" as "diversity of thought." In the world of
Linux distributions, we know we will not always agree with each other. We
may not always think the other person is right or we may think there is a
better way to solve a problem. The thing is, that is okay. What matters is
wherever we go as a community, *we go together*. As Friends. The ability
for us to work together, collaborate, and have fun while doing it is what
makes our community so special and unique. Over the ten years I have been
in this space, that magic feeling of community is what keeps me here and
brings me back to Fedora every day. I have learned so much from many of
you. As we get close to nearly a quarter of a century building Fedora, I am
excited about what is still yet to come in our shared future.
The FOSDEM contributor appreciation dinner is one very small way that we
get to say THANK YOU to our community members. We know not everyone can or
even wants to travel. We know that there are a lot of amazing Fedora folks
who were not in the room with us. But our contributor dinner is one way
that we share the common experience of being a Fedora community member. In
turn, I ask that you help pay it forward for Fedora, wherever and however
that makes the most sense for you. Maybe it is at a local Fedora meetup in
your region, or maybe it is mentoring a newcomer on their first Fedora
package. Whatever your meaning of paying it forward might be, as one of our
appreciated guests, I hope you will help extend the light of the Fedora
community in your own circles of the Project.
Finally, I wanted to give a special acknowledgement to Dorota "Dorka"
Volavkova and Fernando Fernandez Mancera. Dorka is a phenomenal part of our
Events team and Fernando volunteered as event owner for this year's FOSDEM
event. What we pull off here every year in Brussels is a community effort,
and Dorka and Fernando did incredible work to bring the Fedora community
vibes to CentOS Connect and FOSDEM. Thanks to all the visible and invisible
work done by these two to help bring us together for a few days in
(surprisingly warm and sunny!) Brussels.
On behalf of the Fedora leadership team, thank you for all that you do to
make Fedora what it is. Over our 22 years as a community, we have
accomplished a lot together. I believe we are only just getting started.
Enjoy the rest of your FOSDEM! See you around the Fedora stand and the
Distributions DevRoom.
