Hi,
I had organized a Fedora and OpenStack [1] workshop at P.E.S. College
of Engineering [2], Nagsen Vana, Aurangabad, Maharashtra on Saturday,
March 2, 2013.
After a formal inauguration at 1000 IST, I introduced the students to
communication guidelines, mailing list etiquette, and project
guidelines using the "i-want-2-do-project. tell-me-wat-2-do"
presentation [3]. The different Fedora sub-projects [4] to which they
can contribute to were mentioned. I showed the various free/open
source software tools available for them to learn and use. The career
options with free/open source software were also discussed. I had
asked them to write down any questions they had on the forenoon
session, so I could answer them in the afternoon session. Few of their
questions:
* If I do a project in Java, what are my career options?
* What is the difference between open source and Microsoft?
* Is Linux popular only because of security, or are there other reasons too?
* I am interested in mainframes. How should I learn?
* I am interested in a career in animation. What free/open source
software can I use?
* What are the steps to become a good software engineer?
* Can I patent a software product?
Post-lunch, I answered their queries in the Q&A session, to the best
of my knowledge. I also gave them an introduction on copyright,
trademark and patents, and mentioned that IANAL [5]. I then introduced
them to the architecture of OpenStack, explaining the individual
components, and their functionality. The OpenStack Lab Guide [6] was
provided to them to setup their own OpenStack cloud. Some of them had
brought their laptops to try it hands-on. I demonstrated the Horizon
web interface after starting the required services.
All their computer labs have been migrated to Fedora 17. Thanks to
Prof. Nitin Ujgare for working with me in organizing this workshop,
and for maintaining the Fedora labs at the Institute. Aurangabad is
around 230 km from Pune, and takes around 4 1/2 hours by road. There
are frequent bus services between Pune and Aurangabad. You can book
bus tickets at Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC)
[7] web site. There are a number of historic places to visit in and
around Aurangabad. Few photos taken during the trip are available in
my /gallery [8].

SK

*** We need a volunteer to run the meeting this week ***
Please join us for our weekly FAmNA meeting this Tuesday at 9:00pm
Eastern in #fedora-meeting on irc.freenode.net.
I'd like to remind everyone that it is important for us to get some work
accomplished at these meetings and staying on the topic is important
to that end. All comments are welcome from ambassadors during the
meetings but please wait until the Open Floor to add any subject
matter not included in the meeting agenda via a ticket.
Feel free to add to the agenda. The easy way to add an agenda item is
described at the bottom of this announcement. Especially if you have
an event coming up that needs some attention.

Hi all! (and sorry for post to sooo many lists)
As we already have a final schedule (for a three weeks now) and we're
getting closer to release windmills - I'd like to make the schedule
easy to use for everyone (and that means for me too), to be sure
it makes sense etc. And inform you about recent changes I did to schedule
,plans but also I'm going to ask you for a little assistance.
These are a few changes/or requests for your feedback:
1. from F19, schedule moved to FPGM neutral site [1], you can get
there from standard wiki schedule page.
2. cleanup
Over the time, schedule got messy, some teams are even not aware what
a specific milestone means, why it's there, many times it's historical
relict and even collective memory does not work to remember what's
the reason to have it in schedule. On the other hand, I don't want
to remove anything people still relies on, based on my "common sense".
So please, take a look and let me know (some people already contacted
me and I work it in asap).
3. links in schedule
Thanks to Robyn, with her great TJ foo skillz, I'm now able to link
milestones in schedule to wiki and SOPs. Fedora QA asked for that,
I'll try to match as many as possible by myself but if you want to
link specific event to specific url, let me know.
4. future of scheduling, for F20+
For F19, we used a different way to schedule, based on the scope
of submitted features. It worked quite well from developers POV but
we completely forgot other teams and made the scheduling of theirs
tasks harder. I created a FESCo ticket [2], please take a look
(and comment it if you have ideas!). Also we would like to start
F20 as early as possible so the submission period should start
at F19 branch date (or shortly after) to let people propose the
ideas in advance.
5. new TJ3
And the main goal of the move, cleanups and so on is to jump on TJ3
board - I have initial port done, but a lot of changes are needed
and I'd like to start with TJ3 based schedule from a clean old one.
Btw. with any question, ping me, report ideas to schedule Trac [3]
and you know ;-)
Thanks
Jaroslav
