[Event Report] FUDCon Pune, November 4-6, 2011, Pune, India
by Shakthi Kannan
FUDCon Pune 2011
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Day I, Friday, November 4, 2011
I arrived early on day I of FUDCon Pune 2011 [1] to help with the
registration desk. We had different counters for speakers and
volunteers, and for delegates. Fedora banners were placed at various
seminar locations on campus to indicate where the talks and sessions
were being held.
I attended the keynote by Jared Smith [2], the Fedora Project Leader.
The illustrations used in his presentation, 'Fedora "State of the
Union" Address' [3] were really good. I then proceeded to the
classrooms to attend Ramakrishna Reddy's talk on 'Developer Survivor
Manual' [4]. He addressed essential things that newbie developers need
to know, and demoed various revision control systems.
Lunch was served at 12 noon, and then I moved on to attend the 'Fedora
Remix and the Community' [5] talk by Danishka Navin [6]. He shared his
experience with the Hanthana [7] project, which is a Fedora remix that
has support for Sinhalese, and Tamil and has been deployed at various
schools in Sri Lanka. Fedora is one of the first and largest user of
Gitolite [8], and I was happy to meet its author, Sitaram Chamarthy,
from TCS Innovation Labs, Hyderabad, India. His talk [9] was filled
with numerous examples from people using gitolite. The other large
users of gitolite are KDE and kernel.org. I then attended the
'GlusterFS' [10] talk by Krishna Srinivas from Red Hat, who gave an
overview of the Gluster file system, its architecture, and uses.
Day II, Saturday, November 5, 2011
I arrived early again on day II of FUDCon Pune 2011. The day's
proceedings started with a keynote by Harish Pillay [11] on his
thoughts on community work, and on his new role as the lead of
Community Architecture [12]. I then attended the 'Security in the Open
Source world!' talk [13] by Eugene Teo [14] and Huzaifa Sidhpurwala
[15]. Their talk covered quite a bit on the various security threats,
and on how they are handled.
Since I attended the GlusterFS overview talk on the first day, I
wanted to follow it up with the 'GlusterFS: Hacking HOWTO' talk [16]
by Amar Tumballi. He suggested newbies to read on translators as a
starting point to work with Gluster, along with few ideas that they
could start with. Lunch was again served at 12 noon. After lunch, I
headed to Seminar Hall 2 for my talk on 'Quite Universal Circuit
Simulator - A Qt Love Story' [17] [18]. It is an introduction to
electrical circuit theory using circuit components as "fictional" men
and women. The example circuits were created using qucs-0.0.15. The
examples are available at gitorious:
$ git clone git://gitorious.org/qucs-a-qt-love-story/qucs-a-qt-love-story_prj.git
After my talk, I went to the auditorium to attend the talk by Amit
Shah [19] on 'Linux Virtualization' [20] followed by Kashyap
Chamarthy's [21] talk on 'Virtualization with Libvirt' [22]. They had
given a good overview of virtualization in the Linux kernel, and
available tools that one could use. I do use Publican [23], and thus
attended Jared Smith's talk on the same. Publican does insert blank
pages to ensure that new chapters start on the right-hand side if the
content were to be printed as a book. For the final talk of the day, I
attended Rahul Sundaram's [24] session on Askbot for Fedora [25], and
the roadmap and features that he is interested in. We then travelled
to Hotel Parc Estique [26] for the FUDPub!
Final Day, Sunday, November 6, 2011
As a follow-up to my talk on QUCS [17] on day II of FUDCon Pune 2011,
I wanted to create circuit examples on the final day from a text book
that was being followed for basic electrical engineering course work.
This would be a supplement that a student can use when learning
circuit theory. Anuj More and Payas Awadhutkar joined in, and we
worked on schematics from chapter I of 'Fundamentals of Electrical
Engineering' [27] by Leonard S. Boborow, a.k.a "Babu Rao" in India.
The schematics were created in qucs-0.0.16, and are available from
Payas Awadhutkar gitorious repo:
$ git clone git://gitorious.org/qucs-baburao/qucs-baburao.git
I would like to thank all the volunteers from College of Engineering,
Pune [28] and Prof. Abhijit A M [29] who coordinated with us in
organizing this conference. Thanks also goes to the Fedora
contributors who helped in getting things done. Special thanks to Red
Hat for sponsoring the event, and for their wonderful support.
We trained many students over the years as part of the Fedora project.
I was very happy to see them as speakers and present on the things
that they have been working on, and also help others when required
during the conference. This is the best outcome that I take from the
event.
The photos that I took at FUDCon Pune 2011 are available in my /gallery [30].
Re: [Ambassadors] [summary] objection against bckurera.
by Danishka Navin
I copied this mail to Amabassador list
To all FAMSCO members,
I am really disappointed about your poor decision.
You can't control our local decisions as we have freedom in putting the
person who represent from Sri Lanka.
No representation is better than sending such a person.
It was NOT a communication mistake!
Contribution is not about the how much you make noise on Fedora list or IRC.
I am really disappointed about your poor decision and I have been working
for several year for Fedora (more than 5years).
We have done much work but never fool the community. and
If I was him I wont come back to the election.
Seems, I should think about my Fedora contribution again.
To other members:
We kindly asked to withdraw Sri Lankan Ambassadors own nomination as there
was a bad thing happened in here (LK).
But now he or some one else put his name again.
We (Sri Lankan community talked with some of the Fedorians privately but I
think its time to make this public.
(sorry about that)
You have full freedom to do what ever you prefer at the election but...
Please please....think before cast your vote.
Bye for now. (I am leaving from FUDcon)
Ping FAms in ANZ, & RE: LCA.
by Caius Chance
Hi,
Just want to know how many ambassadors still active in Australia and New
Zealand? There will be a Linux Conference Australia happening soon
somewhere near Melbourne, in next January as usual. Hope we can start
discuss the arrangements and get contact with other stakeholders, in order
to get prepared for visiting ambassadors and presenters, etc.
Cheers,
FAD SL has taken place in Sri Lanka
by Buddhike Kurera
Hello FAms,
I have successfully completed the FIRST FAD in Sri Lanka yesterday at SLIIT,
Colombo.
The main objective of this event is to get the IT undergraduates' support
towards the Fedora project and increase the number of contributors from Sri
Lanka.
The event took place in the morning 9:00 - 11:00 am. Myself handle the whole
event and discussed following topics.
* What is the Fedora Project
* Why and How to Join
* Introduction to some teams in the fedora project
* Fedora LK Community launch
The event is really successful and waiting to see more contributors from
Fedora LK Community.
LK Community Wiki - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LK_Community
LK Community ML - https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/lk-users
Further fedora join page is being translated in to si and hoping to cover
all the other teams' join pages as well.
Re: [Ambassadors] [summary] objection against bckurera.
by Suresh Packiyarajah
Dear all Kindly ambassadors,
I am copying entire conversation history which we had because when it came
for public we have to express our self.
we have freedoms that not mean for everything there were some protocols we
need to follow.
if the person want to be famous he has to work hard to achieved some goals
rather than there were no short cut.
Thanks,
Best Regards,
Suresh
Hi Navin
As we discussed already regarding Fedora Srilankan community.we have found
some unwanted things happening in srilanka individually from bckurera for
one example we found First FAD_LK does not happened in srilanka so we have
to clarify with this with him and before FAmsCo nominations because we
believe if would be good if anyone from experience with *genuine* side.
Navin and Kalpa please look on this mail and let him ask same question
which Kital asked because still there is no reply from bckurera about this
thread.once finished this we have to forward this summary to
FamsCo,Kital,Dramsey and Harish as well.
I also disappointed about his silly behaviour.
I think no representation better than FAmsCo representation by such a
person.
Kalpa, any comments?
Shall we send him a mail by requesting to withdraw his own nomination?
and also we should maintain some thing like following.
If some one from Fedora Sri Lanka community, want to be a nominee for the
FAmsco election he should nomited by the Sri Lankan community
Buddhika,
Please have a look on the bellow conversation between Suresh, Kalpa and
myself.
We are requesting you to withdraw your own FAMSCO nomination [1].
As the Sri Lankan Fedora Community, we DO NOT recommend you to the FAMSCO.
We would like to have our own representation at FAMSCO but not a person
like you.
This is due to your bad behaviour.
You are just trying to fool the rest of the Fedora community.
Btw, Here after we (Fedora-Sri Lanka) will decide the nominee from the Sri
Lankan community.
Please withdraw your nomination and behave like a good contributor.
Hello All,
Due to miss-communication I know the event planning did not happen well.
Last minute myself went there and had it. Not like a huge event. Me and
Danisha had a long communication about this after that and agreed
to maintain effective communication via direct mail, not using lists for
planning.
However I have no objection to withdraw the nomination if the community
decides so.
Therefore by accepting the Sri Lankan community request (Danishka and
Suresh) made I here by withdraw my
nomination (nomination page updated).
Hope everything is ok then.
thanks
Dear Rahul,Azneita and Tuna,
We have come with some conclusions behalf of Srilankan Fedora Community by
the way Danishka has missed out you three of us[very important people from
APAC] so i will copy of bellow conversation to you too.
Tuan, We have to refresh our APAC community with new ideas like Hrish said
"there are few counties eg:Thailand..ect without fedora ambassadors" so
question from Harish how can we contribute and distribute Fedora media over
there and also how can we build good communication and make good community
within a country like this..we have to discuss these things in next
meeting.i will strongly suggest to you take a lead and hangout meeting
until Dramsey come back[he is in Japan military] and also bi-weekly meeting
would be enough for APAC so we can arrange the meeting during 1st and 3rd
week of month.
Hope we can analysis these things in next meeting.
Thanking you all for your valuable time.
It was not a FAD any more!
Just a third class election campaign like what we see in real by
Politicians.
As myself and Suresh having contacts in the SLIIT (one of two places
organized RMS's events in 2008).
You just pee their missed the great chance of organizing such a great work.
I was not expecting to talk about this again specially with you.
But please do not take the owner ship of an event if you could not manage
the coordination.
You said you do not having any contacts with any of academics but a
students, but I do.
As I pass-out from SLIIT and Suresh is still in the institute.
As I said before if you have some work with local community then you must
use talk to local people instead of
just making noise on APAC.
Still you are not ready to take the repsponsibility of the silly work that
you have done.
And this is not just Suresh's and my view but also the Kalpa.
We will organize our 1st FAD in 2012 in Sri Lanka.
Please remember that objective of organizing such an event is spreading the
word, getting more contributors and making better user base but not just
collecting funds from the Fedora Project or RedHat.
Any one can fool the global community but not the local community. This is
a small country. :)
I wish you will work with the community in future as a real fedora
contributor.
Best Regards,
Danishka
Hi Suresh,
(btw, my name is Tuan - as you mentioned below :)
I got really confused in this situation. It seems you would like to
tell us that no FAD has been happened in Srilanka yet, right?
As I see this thread status has been set to "closed" :). If so, never
mind; take over to other more important/interesting work.
As listing on wiki [1], there is one ambassador in Thailand although I
have never met him on IRC or the mailing list. However, I do not trust
that list so far since even it does not list me :); you can see, there
is only one ambassador in Vietnam and he is from... Germany :D (of
course, I know this man; he currently lives in Vietnam now)
+1. Suresh, could you please add this topic to agenda of the next
meeting [2].
Sure, I will.
I am considering to drop the "FAD special meeting". I also think the
regular bi-weekly meeting is enough.
Lets try to cancel the next upcoming FAD special meeting [3]. If anyone
like to take it back, we will do.
+1.
You are welcome :).
See you all in the next meeting [2] on Saturday, Nov 12th.
Hello,
I am including in the reply to Fedora Board members. As this has become a
long text, I will top post.
At FAmSCo meeting[0] we discussed about this situation. The agreement is
that there is no reason to stop one Fedora Ambassador to run for a FAmSCo
election. It is to the voters to choose who will represent them better. In
any case, if we have more candidates that will better represent the
community in general, we all be benefited from that. If some one think
that can do it better than any of the current candidates, there is still
time for nominations.
I will also stress the fact that Fedora Project is a very flat
organization with a very fluid leadership. There is no country
representatives and there is no region representatives. There is no
regional quota in FAmSCo. People that leads in one country, in one region,
or in one body of Fedora Project, usually comes from a mix of doing things
and people skills.
The usual wisdom in Fedora Project is that local knowledge is better. If
as a team reached a consensus of what will be best to project your region,
then all for the best.
Best regards
Neville A. Cross
I think that this is good general advice (speaking for myself,
obviously). In the past, we've had people running for various spots in
the project that I thought would not serve the community well, and I
let my voice be heard with my votes, not trying to quash their
candidacy. Reading through this, I think that this is just another
such situation.
However, I'm not quite certain what the "fraud" below refers to. It
sounded to me like he held a poorly organized FAD (and largely
undocumented, for lack of a camera, which I can't incredibly fault him
for) in Sri Lanka (which is one of the reasons that FAD's exist, BTW -
it's a mechanism to take small, measured risk. If it fails in it's
objectives, we're not out a ton of money)
Is there anything specific you'd like the Board to do, or is this just
more of an FYI?
I have posted a mail to the list about the situation. Myself understood
according to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Activity_Day_-_FAD , the
event held was not a FAD just a fedora event, because no fedora contributor
presented other than me. but I planned for a FAD. I have clear all the
reference in FAD wiki page as well.
With no contributor it cant be a FAD. So I updated the event page as well
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAD_Sri_Lanka_2011 . I didnt cheat on global
FAms or grab funds. Please check the trac I didnt request anything for this
event. AND Please dont call me a BAD Contributor, I did a mistake. After
that I am not organizing any FAD here. Just an event. Whatever it is FAD or
FUDCon or normal event what I am doing is spreading Fedora so I have no
worries. Name doesnt give any more advantages. because local community wont
bother much whether it is a FAD or anything coz many donno what FAD means
:) I was trying to host the FAD till the beginning of 2011, SLIIT was very
busy so that scheduling an event wasnt easy. It dragged finally and with
hurry I have this event in August coz I was in need of finishing it.
Otherwise only planning no result. This happen to Kandy SLIIT as well. I
have been contacting SLIIT, Kandy for more than 6 months and finally I was
able to host an event at SLIIT, Kandy last October.(I ll write the report
soon, still pending photos)
Then someone can asked why you waited that long, yes ofcourse first I tried
to get photos to write an event report. I could nt make it as I could nt
visit them, I m in Kandy from last August(100km away). I phoned so many
times but finally my contact was not able to send me pics. Later
the attention was dropped on this. When I nominate myself Danishka sent
this email, after that when I search I realized that wasnt a FAD. We had
APAC FAD meetings, we discussed FAD should not be a full day event, even
half day event can be considered as a FAD. So from the beginning I planned
for a half day (you can see it on the wiki). But I missed the part about
contributors. If I was altered about the contributor requirement I never
plan for a FAD as there is no more than 4 contributors registered with the
fedora project.
I am not a BAD Contributor: Locally, regionally I support my best. I have
contacted individually to all APAC FAms, ask them to join meetings, because
Harish and Dramsey need a more active set of FAms. I supported them, chair
meetings, try to support FAms, helped FUDCon with design team. Locally
represent Fedora, try to expand it by forming a LK Fedora community, expand
to other unis, have talks in events, ask them to join with f.po, promoted
the project. Can you called me bad as I did above mistake? Yes you can call
but I reject it. Anybody think that I did all this for election? yes you
can but dont be hurry, see after election what I ll do.
Finally at first I withdrew my nomination, but it imply that I accepted the
blame and credits as a BAD contributor. Nomination are
made individually (FAmSCo meeting log today). So anyone cannot reject it, I
ll face the election and then the community will decide. Any question can
be asked at the town hall so I can answer. Then the community will decide.
May be I ll be dropped, but it is better than withdrawing. I ll face this
for my honor and I dont care even though I get rejected. I do promote FOSS
because I love it a lot. I am a mechanical engineer so contributing FOSS
gives no credit for me. I am doing this for my pleasure. Fedora is not the
only thing, FOSS User Magazine (www.fossuser.lk) the first FOSS magazine in
Sri Lanka is started by me in 2010 April. The FOSS User community around
it, is build by me. I am not a bad contributor.
Thanks Danishka and Suresh for pointing out this. Danishka is promoting
Fedora locally a lot so he is a good contributor. Majority of Sri Lankans
loved ubuntu but Danishka changed it. So I respect him always. He is a
great person and resource in Sri Lanka.
In summary there are following;
0) The event had in SLIIT was another Introduction event about Fedora.
1) No FAD happened in SL yet and local great FAms can organize it, I will
help you all no matter.
2) I am sorry for confusing it is my fault. Rectified mailing to ML.
3) No money was requested for the event so I didnt grab funds from the
project.
4) I am not a bad contributor or didnt run an election campaign like
a politician.
5) I ll renominate myself again. It is better getting rejecting than
withdrawing by accepting the blame.
[I have changed the mind after reading todays' FAmSCo logs, FAmSCo ppl are
right, Fedora is a community with contributors so let them decide.
Nominations are made by individually]
I agree with John - there have been a number of folks over the years
who I have thought were ill-suited for leadership positions within
Fedora, and my (and the wisdom of others in the Fedora community)
tends to take care of that in one way or another. In Fedora, and other
communities, leadership is a bad term for such positions, they are
really positions of responsibility and extra work, as there is no real
leading of volunteers. I personally disdain private (or public)
communications urging folks not to run.
And while I only speak for myself - I support FAmSCo's stance in this
instance.
To all FAMSCO members,
I am really disappointed about your poor decision.
You can't control our local decisions as we have freedom in putting the
person who represent from Sri Lanka.
No representation is better than sending such a person.
It was NOT a communication mistake!
Contribution is not about the how much you make noise on Fedora list or IRC.
I am really disappointed about your poor decision and I have been working
for several year for Fedora (more than 5years).
We have done much work but never fool the community. and
If I was him I wont come back to the election.
Seems, I should think about my Fedora contribution again.
To other members:
We kindly asked to withdraw Sri Lankan Ambassadors own nomination as there
was a bad thing happened in here (LK).
But now he or some one else put his name again.
We (Sri Lankan community talked with some of the Fedorians privately but I
think its time to make this public.
(sorry about that)
You have full freedom to do what ever you prefer at the election but...
Please please....think before cast your vote.
Bye for now. (I am leaving from FUDcon)
Hi Danishka,
Neither FAmSCo members or candidates are representing a specific region or
country - they are representing all ambassadors around the world.
Every ambassador is welcomed to nominate someone or itself for the
election. As long as there is a nomination received and the nominee is
eligible, it does not need a permission from the local community of the
candidate. I personally disagree putting any pressure to a candidate who
you disliked, to drop its nomination.
You have rights for contributing the community in your own way, just as
others contributed in theirs. However, it is not very fair to force
everyone doing like you. You can put forth the allegation to FAmSCo or
Board when you believe an ambassador has purposely done something against
the Code of Conduct or in general sense. IMHO, the main mechanism of FAm
team is - though there are definitions of activities (FAD/FADCon/etc) or
some SOP of organizations, we should not blame an unintentional failure but
review it retrospectively. As bckurera has admitted the weaknesses during
his previous organizations, why won't we just give him a chance and let the
time prove his passion to Fedora?
Southern CaliforniA Linux Expo (SCALE) 10x
by Mark
Hello fellow Ambadassadors, SCALE 10X (January 20-22) will be the tenth
anniversary of the Linux Expo, and we hope to make it a special. There are
half-dozen tracks and possibly as many as 2,500 attendees. Fedora plans on
having both a table and a FAD. Clint Savage (herlo) will lead the FAD.
I am owner of the event, and considering FUDcon Blacksburg happens just a
few days before, it is best to start planning NOW.
