Apologies for not making the meeting. I have a class that ends just
after the meeting begins.

I spoke with the coordinators just yesterday. They have two ticket
prices and the higher price ticket comes with a goodie bag. They have
requested that we contribute a flier for the bag if we can and
possibly some stickers. They are expecting the ticket price with
schwag to be affordable, probably around $45 for the whole thing.
I did not find an updated flier at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_Fedora_flyer#Fedora_Marketing_-_...
perhaps there is somewhere else to look?

.org booth fee is $100.00. Standard booth fee is $500.00
I assume we are going to submit for the former?

will do. Matt Domsch has been really helpful to me and has offered a
lot of personal support for organizing this. I suggest the same
location where the Lone Star Ruby Conference has been held in the
past, the Norris Conference Center. They have reasonable rates and a
very helpful staff and catering.

Thanks cwtucker. I believe that our responsiblities will lie in booth
setup and participation on the floor.
The conference really needs paper submissions. 45 and 25 minute
presentations are ideal. If anyone would like to present, that would
be super.

I see a lot of big interactive projects hosted on Red Hat and CentOS.
I have not seen any on Fedora. Linux is gaining ground in ontology
hosting. I think that Fedora is important to them. Is anyone doing
something like an OWASP spin or using Fedora-Commons on Fedora? It
would be great to see something semantic or security related in our
booth.

The BarCamp is great here. The problem is that it usually forms and
happens within a 2 to 3 week period and it is over in one weekend.
Very little planning time from event announcement to start date
historically. We need to be ready before they announce - if they do.

Travel to Austin around this time must be planned in advance - way in
advance. I have had trouble flying to even Birmingham AL during SXSW.
AMTrack is an easy ride down from Dallas, though. It has wireless
internet all the way.

Campus Ambassadors Organizational Meeting February 13 at 1800UTC
by inode0
I'd like to invite everyone interested in the Campus Ambassador
program to an organizational meeting on February 13 at 1800UTC. The
meeting will be held in #fedora-campusamb on freenode. Information
about the vision of the Campus Ambassador program can be found at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Campus_Ambassadors
I'd like to discuss this vision with you and Fedora's commitment to
the success of this program. The goal of the meeting will be to
identify any deficiencies in this vision, any omissions that would
hinder its success, and come up with a strategy to enable us to make
this happen now.
The price of admission is free, so please come and join us in making
this program a success.

Event report: Shmoocon (Also tagged as Shnowcon)
by Ivan Makfinsky
This past weekend I attended Shmoocon in Washington, DC. It happened to
coincide with a massive winter storm that dumped over two feet of snow
on the area.
The event is a security focused conference in it's seventh year with
approximately 1500 attendees every year. In spite of the snow, almost
everyone made it. Unfortunately, I was not sure I was going to be able
to make it to the event, so no booth was organized.
Most security folks seem to use either Ubuntu, Debian, Backtrack or
(oddly) OSX. Many of the comments with regard to Fedora seemed to be of
the effect, "I ran it back in the Fedora Core {2,3,4,5} days and it was
too much work to get it to a usable state." Many folks were either happy
to get a LiveCD or honest enough to let me know that they probably
wouldn't even try it.
Since most of the presentations were about vulnerabilities in this or
that technology, I am not sure if I should be glad that Fedora wasn't
mentioned or saddened that I didn't see anyone using Fedora other than,
well, me. I did give out nearly all of the LiveCD's, half the install
DVD's, buttons and case badges that I had.
I did meet Bruce Potter and will follow up with him in next month about
the logistics of having a Fedora booth, presentation or challenge type
participation for next year.
There were some fairly interesting presentations and I learned that most
of today's wifi/bluetooth/cloud/web services/<you name it> technologies
are fairly vulnerable to compromise. There were some great presentations
with live demo's.

When you are at an event...
by Christoph Wickert
... please don't hack!
For certain reasons (FOSDEM in this case) I'd like to remind you all of
some rules you should follow when you are attending an event.
1. When you are at an event and you are doing service at the Fedora
booth, please don't just sit behind the table staring at your
laptop and chatting with each other. Instead, try to spend your
time on the visitors.
2. Instead of sitting behind the desk, stand before it. If you are
standing you can better talk to people cause you don't have look
up all the time and if you are in front of the booth, it's
easier to get in touch with people.
I was surprised to see that some people did builds and updates this
afternoon while they were at FOSDEM. Even worse: At least some of them
already heard about the complainants of some visitors that the Fedora
people were just sitting and hacking all the time.
I have not been at the event so I cannot tell if these complainants were
justified or not, but I think FOSDEM is definitely not the place to do
package maintainance. It's is for meeting people! It's only two days
each year, so when you are there, please do yourself a favor and ether
spend the time on people or attend some of the excellent talks.

Christoph

Budget Support for Fedora Indonesia
by Alzea Alzea
Dear Fedora Ambassadors
A few days ago we (Fedora Indonesia) had guests from Germany. Mr.
Mario Behling of LXDE fundation. He called on us to attend and
represent Fedora Indonesia in the event Gnome Asia Summit to be held
in Vietnam in November 2010. Honestly we do not have the funds to
transport and accommodation costs, we are pure free support community
and do not get support funds from any others party. My question, could
we get funding for transport and accommodation from Fedora, to attend
the Gnome Asia Summit in Vietnam? honest we really wanted to attend
the event. as Fedora Indoneisa.
Thanks a lot.
warm regards.
