I found this site after reading Stormy Peters' blog post about where
she will be going in 2010 to represent GNOME.
I have a couple of thoughts:
(1) In our regional meetings, I think it would make sense to take a look
at this calendar and see if there is anything on it that we want to make
a Fedora event, and add to our events page.
(2) If there are Fedora events on our events page that are not on this
site, we might want to consider submitting that event, so that it shows
(3) I'll find a few extra dollars in my team's budget, and make a small
donation. It looks like the site is run by the same folks who run

Sorry I missed the NA meeting
by Larry Cafiero
Hey, NA folks --
I was heading back to my office in Felton when a pickup ran a red light and
I got to try out the air bags in the 15-year-old VW (which worked
Anyway, I wanted to mention a possibility for the SCaLE FAD at the meeting
this evening, which obviously can be discussed further on list prior to the
The Fedora 13 Test Days are scheduled for Thursdays between now and the
release of F13 -- the schedule is here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Fedora_13_test_days -- and I was wondering
if we took the one before SCaLE, which would be a day later on Friday, Feb.
It might be interesting to do something for the new release -- what that
might be I would open to suggestion. But I wanted to throw that thought out

Links and Logs Fedora Ambassador NA meeting yesterday
by Scott McBrien
Hi all, wanted to provide the links to the meeting details from last night.
Most of the discussion was around having a Fedora Ambassador Day in
May, the link is in the minutes, ideas on places where ambassadors
could evangalize Fedora outside of OSS cons or shows, and
brainstorming some new promotional items to get made up for
And the inclusion of the complete log:

02:10:27 <inode0> StabbyMc: those are all mine
02:10:33 * lcameron is late...
02:10:38 * StabbyMc yeilds the floor to inode0
02:10:44 <inode0> https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAD_NA_2010
02:11:15 <inode0> Initial proposal for the Fedora Ambassador Day(s)
for NA this year
02:11:33 <makfinsky> woa... Iowa.
02:11:38 <inode0> If anyone wants to propose alternate dates/locations
feel free to do that
02:11:49 <inode0> makfinsky: nice central location :)
02:12:09 <StabbyMc> inode0: what's the close airport and how close is it?
02:12:10 <makfinsky> Cool, that's one of the few states I have yet to visit.
02:12:34 <inode0> DSM is 30 miles away, there is a shuttle and I can
be a shuttle too
02:12:43 <cwtucker> <looking> at map
02:13:03 * StabbyMc looking at delta.com
02:13:12 <inode0> Here is what I'd like to suggest
02:13:47 <inode0> If there are big problems or desires for a different
place/time it would be nice to get that on the table soon
02:14:24 <inode0> If there aren't objections by the next FAmNA meeting
I'll proceed with locking down commitments for the resources needed
02:14:32 <ke4qqq> inode0: it's awfully close to SELF
02:14:38 <ke4qqq> datewise
02:14:50 <ke4qqq> but there may not be a better time
02:14:56 <ke4qqq> just noting it, not really objecting
02:15:27 * inode0 doesn't see SELF on the Fedora Events page and
doesn't know when it is
02:15:48 <threethirty> http://southeastlinuxfest.org
02:15:50 <StabbyMc> 6/10 - 6/14
02:16:40 <inode0> that is almost 3 weeks later, so not terrible
02:16:48 <makfinsky> I'm in for FAD.
02:17:13 <inode0> Ok, well, just think about it until our next meeting please
02:17:19 <makfinsky> Yeah, that doesn't seem too close.
02:17:30 <inode0> And add work items to the wiki page - we need an agenda
02:17:36 <xm4nfedoralinux> Anyone for Texas LinuxFest?
02:18:20 <VileGent> xm4nfedoralinux, the more the better
02:18:21 <inode0> StabbyMc: you lost your job!
02:18:26 <VileGent> cwtucker, ??
02:18:40 <StabbyMc> xm4nfedoralinux: lets hold that to the end of the
events on the agenda :-)
02:18:56 <inode0> Well it is next up
02:19:09 * StabbyMc needs VileGent to fire him.
02:19:22 <StabbyMc> *again*
02:19:34 <inode0> Anything else about the possible FAD before going
on? We will have budget to help people get to it.
02:19:34 <mock> sorry i'm late...and i might suffer some network problems...
02:20:15 <inode0> TLF then ...
02:20:15 <StabbyMc> inode0: what is the purpose of a Fedora Ambassador Day?
02:20:36 <VileGent> inode0, i dont guess that regions ambassador
wants a fedora presence at SELF
02:20:58 <inode0> VileGent: can you rephrase that for me?
02:21:03 <cwtucker> Texas indeed
02:21:03 <cwtucker> VileGent: yes, sorry internet issues for a min
02:21:09 <inode0> oh, not on the events page
02:21:17 <VileGent> exactly
02:21:35 <StabbyMc> inode0: what is the purpose of a Fedora Ambassador Day?
02:21:39 <inode0> I'm sure it just isn't there yet
02:21:51 <xm4nfedoralinux> so we are still on the events before Texas
02:22:03 <inode0> xm4nfedoralinux: yes, hold on
02:22:15 <xm4nfedoralinux> ok. brb
02:22:46 <inode0> StabbyMc:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAD_EMEA_2009 <- look at that for an
02:23:29 <inode0> basically to plan ambassador activities/projects,
give and get feedback to/from Red Hat, etc.
02:24:26 <makfinsky> Hmm, cake break is on the agenda for fad emea
2009. Can we have one of those?
02:24:28 <StabbyMc> Ok, the wiki is slow, I'll look at it after the meeting.
02:24:47 <inode0> ok, we can come back to it later during open floor
02:24:58 <StabbyMc> makfinsky: in America we only have cookie breaks.
02:25:01 <inode0> https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Texas:LinuxFest_2010
02:25:08 <mock> makfinsky: the cake is a lie
02:25:28 <inode0> We are going to have a nice presence at the 1st
Texas Linux Fest I hope
02:25:54 <inode0> Anyone interested should sign up and chat with me or
David Duncan (davdunc) about helping
02:26:10 <cwtucker> Definitely interested, and will be involved
02:26:17 <inode0> CFP is in progress now so if you plan to go please
consider proposing a talk
02:27:00 <inode0> I have set aside 400 pieces of F12 media to ship to
TLF pending talking to David about the appropriateness of that number
02:28:08 <inode0> We need the ground troops to tell us what is needed
in terms of other swag and booth help
02:28:14 <cwtucker> Expecting a fairly large turnout
02:28:16 <inode0> We will definitely have a booth
02:28:59 <VileGent> is a event box or banners needed
02:29:12 <inode0> on a tangent to TLF I'd like to encourage people
there to nose around and make as many contacts as possible with a site
for a future FUDCon in mind :)
02:29:22 <cwtucker> I will get with David and see where/what he needs
me to do to help him
02:30:00 <inode0> Austin always comes up as a place for FUDCon and the
one thing that seems to hold it back is not having a suitable site for
the event itself
02:30:51 <inode0> shall we move on?
02:31:10 <inode0> I think we'll do what is needed to make TLF a
success for Fedora
02:31:23 <inode0> VileGent: probably
02:31:47 <cwtucker> I will get with you later inode0 to discuss in
more detail with you
02:31:56 <inode0> great, thanks cwtucker
02:32:24 <inode0> "Expanding reach of Fedora into new event areas -
target #1 Design"
02:32:41 <inode0> This I hope isn't controversial
02:33:25 <inode0> What I'd like to get though is basic agreement about
whether we (FAmNA) should be sponsoring events outside our normal
02:34:00 <inode0> Say the Design team has a conference where the focus is design
02:34:43 <inode0> They can showcase how the design team in Fedora
works and learn from others, possibly connect with like minded people
and get new contributors, etc.
02:34:59 <inode0> Can we sponsor those events? I think we should try.
02:35:06 <makfinsky> I like the idea.
02:35:06 <threethirty> that could be tied to talks at said events
02:35:18 <makfinsky> I was about to mention mizmo, speaking of which.
02:35:38 <inode0> let's look at SXSW as an example of an event that we
would not traditionally attend or sponsor
02:35:46 <mizmo> sup
02:35:55 <xm4nfedoralinux> I am so ecited to go to Texas Linux fest!
02:35:56 <StabbyMc> SXSW = South by South West the music fest?
02:36:10 <inode0> mizmo: don't blow it, I'm trying to get FAmNA to
sponsor design conferences :)
02:36:30 <inode0> StabbyMc: yes, but it is more than music
02:36:31 <threethirty> inode0: good point, South By would be a good
place to show off what we (royal we) do
02:36:53 <inode0> it is a bunch of events and one of the big ones is
the interactive part
02:36:58 <threethirty> StabbyMc: its expanded to many other things but
yes its *that* sxsw
02:37:09 <inode0> http://sxsw.com/interactive
02:37:30 <inode0> this would be interesting to designers, right mizmo?
02:37:53 <mizmo> inode0: absolutely
02:38:05 <inode0> anthro-diana: ping if you are available just chime in here
02:38:22 <mizmo> it would be a good opportunity to present a case for
free software to the design community
02:38:28 <mizmo> which we have not done much of
02:38:28 <anthro-diana> There is a very large design faction and even
a bit of a design tract at the conference
02:38:50 <ke4qqq> so we could potentially garner talented capable
02:38:56 <anthro-diana> I as a designer have attended for the last 2 years
02:38:58 <anthro-diana> Yes
02:39:01 <inode0> so this isn't the normal event for us, but it would
promote Fedora, it would benefit Fedora contributors, and it would
reach an audience that is likely sympathetic to us but perhaps not
aware of us
02:39:14 <anthro-diana> There is also a large open source contingent there
02:39:26 <ke4qqq> who is that contingent?
02:39:36 <anthro-diana> it differs from year to year
02:39:42 <anthro-diana> not necessary sponsored by any company
02:39:50 <VileGent> we are to spread fedora even to places that we
might not be the most comfortable
02:40:05 <threethirty> like macworld :)
02:40:15 <anthro-diana> There are the usual players as well
02:40:27 <inode0> actually I think SXSW would be very comfortable with Fedora
02:40:29 <anthro-diana> but software is definitely a focus
02:40:51 <inode0> it just isn't a place we normally show up
02:41:21 <crossbytes> so has someone been to this SXSW it looks very
02:41:30 <xm4nfedoralinux> so who is attending TLF
02:42:29 <inode0> crossbytes: anthro-diana just talked about attending
02:42:38 <threethirty> crossbytes: i havent been their personally but
i have follwed it on the net and it looks like a cool event, ive been
wanting to go for years
02:42:54 <anthro-diana> there is also the side event of Bar Camp Austin
02:43:03 <inode0> ok, there is a second part of this story ... oops
02:43:13 <anthro-diana> :)
02:43:13 <makfinsky> Bar Camp?
02:43:22 <makfinsky> As in making drinks?
02:43:46 <inode0> so there is a barcamp we can have a normal presence at
02:44:16 <inode0> Is everyone ok with spreading our event wings a bit
to try to reach some new audiences?
02:44:22 <StabbyMc> bar camp, the concept: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_camp
02:44:51 <inode0> http://barcamp.org/BarCampAustin <- last year's link
02:44:51 <makfinsky> inode0: Agreed.
02:45:07 <cwtucker> inode0: sounds good
02:45:43 * inode0 asks mizmo and anthro-diana to come up with a plan :)
02:46:13 <threethirty> is there a large Ambassador/design crossover?
02:46:16 <inode0> and keep eyes open for other opportunities
02:46:45 <threethirty> or would there need to be some ambassadors to
help with that?
02:46:52 <ke4qqq> threethirty: tatica and mizmo
02:47:04 <mizmo> with the timing unfortunately i may not be able to make it :(
02:47:08 <ke4qqq> ohh an ianweller and herlo
02:47:19 <anthro-diana> I'll be happy to help out in any way I can
02:47:24 <inode0> mizmo: things don't always have to happen now, there
is next year
02:47:34 * mizmo hopes
02:48:33 * inode0 is happy with the plan to watch for these sorts of
opportunities and grab them when we can
02:49:28 <StabbyMc> inode0: finished with events?
02:49:31 * inode0 gives the floor back but feel free to chat up the
02:49:47 <anthro-diana> the barcamp is like the open source version of SXSW
02:49:50 <StabbyMc> Any other event based items that were not on the agenda?
02:50:02 <anthro-diana> SXSWi is generally cost prohibitive to many people
02:50:07 <nullsys> I do have something small, but I dont know how much
it will affect US people.
02:50:20 <anthro-diana> so a lot of people just go to Austin to attend
the BC that benefits from the overflow of SXSWi
02:50:27 <inode0> mizmo: and please tell everyone what a lovely place
Iowa is for those who haven't been here :)
02:50:45 <makfinsky> Ah, I may be attending Shmoocon in dc at the end
of Feb. If anyone else is going, hit me up.
02:50:52 <StabbyMc> anthro-diana: I can see that; travel to Austin
around the time of SxSW is also rather prohibitive.
02:51:17 <anthro-diana> I've found roommates on Twitter just so that I
could attend :)
02:51:51 <anthro-diana> My badge is comped this year, so I am already
going, I also have a suite already reserved in hopes to be able to
share it with roommates
02:51:56 <mizmo> inode0: Iowa is indeed lovely :)
02:52:20 <anthro-diana> My first year I slept on the floor of a French
02:52:35 <nullsys> Myself and MooDoo are working on a UK Fedora site,
we felt we could offer something to UK users and contributors by
adding a UK based Fedora dedicated site and Freenode channel, we have
already setup #fedora-uk but the site is coming soon. I wanted to just
inform other ambassadors of this incase an occasion were to arise in
the future were such info might be helpful.
02:53:36 <cwtucker> antro-diana: kinda like a hacker gathering in
Vienna where everyone just crashes wherever they find space?
02:53:49 <anthro-diana> kinda yeah
02:54:12 <cwtucker> anthro-diana: k, now I am with the program :)
02:54:19 <StabbyMc> #topic Fedora North America semi-montly meeting BUDGET
02:54:24 <mizmo> nullsys: i may be in the UK next month
02:54:39 <StabbyMc> so again I yeild the floor to inode0
02:54:48 <nullsys> Brilliant mizmo :)
02:55:44 <inode0> sorry stepped away
02:56:05 <StabbyMc> no worries, so we need a prioratized swag list.
02:56:11 <inode0> ok
02:56:19 <StabbyMc> I don't know what others think, but I'm just going
to throw this out there.
02:56:22 <StabbyMc> (1) Tee Shirts
02:56:33 <inode0> we are likely to have some end of year opportunities
for acquiring swag
02:56:42 <StabbyMc> (2) Vynl Stickers
02:56:48 <inode0> what we need and we need it pretty fast is a list of
things we want
02:56:49 <StabbyMc> (3) pens replenishment ?
02:57:13 <inode0> we need to be able to act on these fairly fast to
make orders, so we need our ducks in a row
02:57:58 <inode0> so I'd like a list of things we want and have them
ordered roughly by how much we want them and how easy it is for us to
02:58:25 <inode0> t-shirts is a done deal, we have some details to
work out still but we will order more t-shirts this quarter
02:58:36 <StabbyMc> Well anything we've done before is easy to re-order.
02:58:53 <StabbyMc> What do our stockpiles of existing items look
like, ie, is there something we need to replenish?
02:59:09 <VileGent> case badges??
02:59:10 <inode0> I am expecting we will be able to get 300-400 t-shirts
02:59:14 <StabbyMc> I know vynl stickers would be new.
02:59:23 <StabbyMc> VileGent: case badges are done and should ship this week.
02:59:24 <inode0> case badges are already ordered and should ship to
us any day now
02:59:31 <VileGent> whoohoo
02:59:43 <StabbyMc> Clings are done and I should get them this week or next.
02:59:47 <xm4nfedoralinux> listen,
03:00:09 <inode0> ok, so we have new clings, case badges, and t-shirts
03:00:20 <StabbyMc> do we need more pens?
03:00:35 <nullsys> If you dont mind me asking: I dont believe we have
any kind of merchanise supply for the UK. Could someone talk to me
about this at some point? I feel the UK could benefit from it.
03:00:36 <StabbyMc> they're easy and relatively in expensive for vast
03:00:46 <inode0> I am not sure about the pen supply but I'm guessing
we likely still have more than 1,000 of them
03:01:10 <inode0> nullsys: ping me in #fedora-ambassadors later and
I'd be happy to
03:01:17 <ke4qqq> nullsys: lets talk after the meeting
03:01:25 <nullsys> thanks both of you
03:01:29 <StabbyMc> We ordered 3K like 6 months ago, so probably ok
there until next quarter'ish.
03:02:01 <inode0> StabbyMc: I have close to 500, Brian has the
left-overs from the Summit which was a substantial number
03:02:02 <StabbyMc> If stickers are on the list, I can start working
on those next week.
03:02:21 <VileGent> stabby voice stickers??
03:02:35 <StabbyMc> voice stickers?
03:02:38 <inode0> Stickers are always wanted so I would put that high
on the list if we have a place we can get them
03:02:47 <inode0> VileGent: yes
03:02:53 <VileGent> +1000
03:03:01 <inode0> StabbyMc: the BF style laptop stickers
03:03:10 <ke4qqq> +1 for BF style laptop stickers
03:03:16 <threethirty> +1
03:03:18 <ke4qqq> my current laptop is unadorned :(
03:03:20 <crossbytes> +1
03:03:45 <Arsenick> +1
03:03:49 <threethirty> i have a new laptop shipping tomorrow i need stickers :)
03:04:01 <inode0> we are pretty much out of buttons which are cheap
and can go on the list for cleanup duty
03:04:54 <xm4nfedoralinux> I am having problems, with parents.
03:05:31 <inode0> xm4nfedoralinux: these meetings are logged and
posted so you might want to just excuse yourself when necessary
03:06:18 <xm4nfedoralinux> sorry, it was meant for another chat.
03:06:51 <inode0> so anything else? rrix was looking into baseball hats
03:06:52 <StabbyMc> BF laptop stickers are like:
03:07:05 <StabbyMc> I'm just trying to figure out what is wanted.
03:07:15 <etank> inode0: the t-shirts are the 2 color ones right. not
the splatter shirts.
03:07:32 <cwtucker> inode0: Baseball caps would go over very well here in Texas
03:08:00 <inode0> those are 3" stickers iirc, VileGent?
03:08:18 <VileGent> yep
03:08:25 <StabbyMc> ah BF = Brand Fuel. Now I'm on the same page.
03:09:16 <inode0> etank: we are thinking about the I (f) Fedora design
03:09:20 <StabbyMc> They're also die cut, which is why they have the
exact Finity logo shape. Die cut tend to be a bit more $pendy, but
I'll work on getting something.
03:09:46 <inode0> possibly with a base white or blue - but a white
base allows us about 100 more shirts for the same price
03:10:08 <etank> inode0: sounds good
03:10:42 <inode0> the logo is 3 color iirc, but the splatter was 6
03:10:46 <inode0> or more
03:11:10 <VileGent> splatters look good but way too expensive
03:11:13 <inode0> which cost about 50% more
03:11:16 <mock> the decalgirl link type stickers are something we are
03:11:31 <mock> or the smaller ones?
03:11:47 <inode0> mock: just tossing around ideas, open to anything at
03:11:56 <StabbyMc> mock: smaller ones, I mis understood what we were
03:12:13 <mock> inode0: the laptop skins are very nice, actually
03:12:50 <inode0> laptops come in lots of shapes and sizes, a 3" logo
nicely fits in the middle of almost all of them :)
03:13:30 <inode0> well, keep thinking about this while I digress
03:13:45 <inode0> Persistent infrastructure items?
03:13:52 <inode0> do we need anything?
03:13:57 <mock> but i think we could setup/make available the fedora
design for the skins as people might order
03:14:09 <mock> yes, sorry
03:14:10 <inode0> banners, table skirts, fatheads?
03:14:32 <etank> fatheads?
03:15:01 <inode0> just something that can be reused at events to promote Fedora
03:15:10 <threethirty> etank: big effin stickers
03:15:28 <inode0> I actually have artwork from mizmo for fatheads
03:15:45 <StabbyMc> etank: http://www.fathead.com
03:15:58 <inode0> I paused after reading the agreement they wanted me
to sign ... I wanted someone else to say it was ok
03:16:22 <StabbyMc> I would say table cloths would be an easy one to
get knocked out.
03:16:24 <etank> wow those are big
03:16:49 <nullsys> And expensive.
03:17:17 <inode0> $100 for something like that that can be used many
times isn't really expensive
03:17:35 <nullsys> Good point. Its durable and easily stored.
03:17:52 <makfinsky> inode0: What was in the agreement that made you pause?
03:17:55 <VileGent> StabbyMc, tablecloths are easy go to walmart and
get a sheet for $4
03:18:07 <inode0> we would already have one if I didn't balk when
reading the agreement
03:18:11 <StabbyMc> VileGent: i was thinking one that's logo'ized
03:18:33 <inode0> makfinsky: giving them wide rights to use what I
submitted how they saw fit
03:18:33 <ke4qqq> inode0: is it something that needs RHT-legal to
weigh in on- or is mizmo enough since she is the art-queen
03:18:41 <VileGent> StabbyMc, you are looking @ $120 to $200 each
03:18:50 <makfinsky> inode0: Ah...
03:18:57 <mizmo> ke4qqq: im red hat's official appointed logo approver person
03:18:58 <StabbyMc> VileGent: but this is a wishlist, right?
03:19:06 <inode0> so I submit the logo, they get to use it however
they want ... more or less
03:19:36 <makfinsky> Well, isn't most artwork CC licensed?
03:19:39 <ke4qqq> inode0: phone conversation that gets us around that
03:19:42 <ke4qqq> makfinsky: not logo
03:19:44 <mizmo> the logo is not CC
03:19:46 <inode0> I just wasn't personally comfortable with making the
decision at the time
03:19:48 <makfinsky> Oh.
03:19:55 <mizmo> would they be working with the svg or png?
03:20:07 * inode0 doesn't recall now
03:20:23 <inode0> and doesn't really recall the details, just the
general nature of my concern
03:20:26 <mizmo> if they're not modifying the logo and respect our copyright...
03:20:48 <mizmo> i can have red hat legal take a look at any
agreements or anything needed
03:21:13 <inode0> well when you get to the upload the artwork step a
big thing pops up for you to read and agree to ...
03:21:19 <mizmo> ah
03:21:26 <mizmo> thats what we'd need red hat legal to look at
03:21:29 <inode0> I'll go back later and see if I can copy it
03:22:16 <inode0> ok, we'll revisit fatheads
03:22:31 <inode0> infrastructure stuff?
03:23:42 <inode0> ok, then I'm done although I'm interested in
continuing the swag list
03:24:51 <StabbyMc> I guess we could quote hats, though I think they'd
be less bang for the buck than something else.
03:24:56 <StabbyMc> like tee shirts.
03:25:06 * ke4qqq thought hats were verboten
03:25:13 <StabbyMc> wasn't rrix quoting those?
03:25:17 <ke4qqq> despite them being offered for sale
03:25:21 <mock> inode0: i'll try to find you later (tomorrow) and chat
about skins. i like that idea if there's a possibility.
03:25:28 <inode0> yes, I was talking about a screenprinted table skirt
which looks very professional and really draws attention
03:25:32 <cwtucker> why are they verboten?
03:26:03 <inode0> ke4qqq: BF sells Fedora hats so I can't imagine we
can't give them away
03:26:40 <threethirty> cwtucker: RHT doesnt want us possibly confusing
03:26:52 <ke4qqq> BF also violates trademark policies wrt logo
03:27:15 <ke4qqq> doesn't mean we can or should do it - I'd at least
like someone to bless it - like mizmo or spevack
03:27:18 <ke4qqq> before we proceed
03:27:27 <inode0> anyway, I don't think their is any prohibition
against hats as swag
03:27:48 <mizmo> we already have a precedent for fedora baseball caps
03:28:21 <makfinsky> It's a shame my wife says I don't look good
wearing ball caps - says I have a big head.
03:28:22 <mizmo> im happy to bring any vendor agreements to RH legal
to approve and help get that stuff taken care of so you folks can
03:28:36 <mizmo> you should see my hat, it's a panda hat
03:28:39 <ke4qqq> inode0:
03:28:47 <inode0> I tend to agree that hats aren't very good bang for
the buck though
03:29:25 <cwtucker> inode0: I am interested in following up on this hat issue
03:29:48 * etank wouldn't mind having a fedora hat
03:29:59 <ke4qqq> I agree it's silly - but still, someone somewhere
thought it was important many years ago. Though we do have precedent.
03:30:11 <StabbyMc> ke4qqq: I think that article discusses why one
shouldn't wear a RED HAT when representing Fedora.
03:30:19 * mock needs to go for now and will follow up with the transcripts.
03:30:29 <inode0> it goes farther, but really
03:30:45 <mizmo> im pretty sure the main concern is with red hats, or
fedoras of any color
03:30:46 <inode0> Red Hat sells Fedora baseball hats
03:30:57 <ke4qqq> StabbyMc: it says: Our founding organization and
main sponsor, Red Hat, has specifically requested that we not connect
hats, red in color or otherwise, to the Fedora Project. Please do not
use a hat, whether it's a fedora or any other type of hat, in any
presentation of Fedora or to represent the Fedora Project in any way.
03:31:01 <mizmo> im very confident fedora baseball hats, as long s
they are not red, are fine
03:31:19 <StabbyMc> mizmo: what about pink, covered in Hello Kitty hats?
03:31:25 <mizmo> ke4qqq: i definitely see where that owrding could cause concern
03:31:39 <mizmo> StabbyMc: lol i need to show you my panda hat tomorrow
03:31:48 <cwtucker> StabbyMc: I just think it would be nice to have
Fedora hats for LUGs here, the other people wear them with other
Distro names on them
03:31:57 <makfinsky> I would love to see panda hat. :)
03:32:24 <StabbyMc> cwtucker: I understand, but if the choice is
ordering 100 hats of 3000 stickers, the stickers will likely win.
03:32:25 <ke4qqq> mizmo: don't necessarily agree with it, but it seems
pretty staunch in it's hat stance. I'd happily see it reformed
03:32:53 <cwtucker> StabbyMc: no question there. Just a small wish list
03:32:57 <inode0> keeps your eyes closed at FUDCon if you don't want
to see hats :)
03:33:08 <mizmo> ke4qqq: ill get in contact with the legal folks and
verify the ball caps are okay, and try to get that wording changed
03:33:26 <ke4qqq> mizmo: awesome
03:33:37 <inode0> but the real problem with hats is they cost $10 each
03:33:49 <mizmo> visors are a little cheaper
03:33:57 <StabbyMc> IIRC that was put up because people representing
Fedora were showing up places in Red RedHat Fedoras, which confused
the independence or quasi-independence of Fedora.
03:34:11 <etank> visors aren't as cool though
03:34:22 <etank> imho
03:34:27 <StabbyMc> etank 8 of 10 NFL coaches disagree!
03:34:40 <etank> bah what do they know :)
03:34:46 <inode0> I like visors too, but either way this is an expensive item
03:34:57 <inode0> Feel free to go off and round up quotes
03:35:10 <mizmo> hats are more repeat-advertisement than stickers
03:35:20 <mizmo> the problem is its more of a gamble whether or not
the person you give the hat to will actually wear it around
03:35:22 <cwtucker> inode0: Cost is higher, although, I think a small
quantity could be more repetitve here
03:35:52 <inode0> if we can't get hundreds of them we can't do much
with them to be honest
03:35:53 <VileGent> mizmo that is just it at events to get hats or
tshirts they have to put them on right then
03:35:57 <mizmo> hats are good for a smaller group who are technically
knowledgable, i think stickers are better for a wider audience who may
not be as technical
03:36:03 <StabbyMc> well as I pointed out, we are talking about a wish
list, so lets see what it shakes out ot.
03:36:21 <mizmo> VileGent: but when they go home from an event and
wear the hat around, that's where the real advertising opportunity
03:36:23 <mizmo> s/it/in
03:36:42 <VileGent> yep
03:36:48 <StabbyMc> mizmo: I have like 20 Red Hat caps. I wear 0.
03:36:51 <xm4nfedoralinux> ok guys, I have to go now.
03:36:52 <mizmo> if i had a fedora user for every time someone stopped
me on the street randomly to make a comment on my panda hat :)
03:36:54 <inode0> mizmo: you are about to get a Fedora cling for you car window
03:37:05 <mizmo> inode0: lol my non functional car :)
03:37:09 <mizmo> inode0: maybe it will heal it!
03:37:11 <inode0> how is that for repeat advertising?
03:37:33 <cwtucker> StabbyMC: you should send a couple of them here to Tx
03:37:41 <mizmo> inode0: lol its a good billboard, the car looks so
terrible people stop to look at it
03:37:59 <StabbyMc> cwtucker: but they are mines! My hatses!
03:38:16 <etank> unless they say "man if fedora did that to a car i
dont want it on my computer"
03:38:24 <cwtucker> StabbyMC: just trying to get them some use :)
03:38:30 <StabbyMc> Anyone have other ideas for swag items or event box items?
03:38:32 <EvilBob> StabbyMc: Are they all as ill fitting as the craps
03:38:42 <EvilBob> caps
03:39:00 * inode0 thought that was intentional
03:39:07 * etank too
03:39:09 <cwtucker> +1 on intentional
03:39:32 <threethirty> i think the classics are the way to go
stickers/shirts/media anything else is just some crap people have to
carry around the con floor
03:39:53 <threethirty> hats can go on heads so that works
03:40:05 * StabbyMc just brainstorming
03:40:14 <StabbyMc> screen printed tote bags?
03:40:35 <inode0> we could look again at getting lanyards
03:40:36 <StabbyMc> The reusable cloth ones similar to the reusable
grocery store bags?
03:40:48 <mizmo> those are really popular these days in my neck of the woods
03:40:50 <StabbyMc> badge reels?
03:40:53 <inode0> for future event sponsorship use
03:40:54 <crossbytes> Writing instruments are the most commonly owned
tchotchkes, with 54 percent of respondents owning them, followed by
shirts, caps and bags.
03:41:14 <EvilBob> StabbyMc: I have been seeing them at other types of
event, useful and visible
03:41:40 <mizmo> so actually i have a really cool idea for a sticker
sheet that would maybe give Fedora a really positive vibe
03:41:44 <threethirty> StabbyMc: brilliant, at least then people look
at us as the people who are helpful, i remember i got a hackysac and
bouncy balls at OLF one year... such a PITA
03:41:44 <StabbyMc> mizmo: you philthy hippy.
03:41:46 <mizmo> stolen from a preivous libre graphics meeting
03:41:48 <ke4qqq> crossbytes: where did that come from?
03:41:57 <mizmo> they had a sticker sheet with different 'personality'
03:42:03 <mizmo> they were all circular stickers
03:42:11 <mizmo> very small, like little yard sale price tag size
03:42:29 <crossbytes> been trying to find out most kept/used swag..
03:42:31 <makfinsky> Sounds like a sticker sheet that RH used to have.
03:42:39 <makfinsky> But w/o personality.
03:42:41 <mizmo> there were stickers with: steve jobs caricature, bill
gates caricature, linus torvalds.... veggies, meat.... vectors,
bitmap.... vim, emac...
03:42:44 <VileGent> mizmo and sorry they go over like a lead balloon
03:42:58 <StabbyMc> One of the items I think we can improve on is the
sticker sheets. One of the stickers I often use is the blank speech
bubble, but use it as a nametag. Very handy, but could be nicer with
a logo on it.
03:42:59 <mizmo> and you'd take the stickers from the sheet that
represented your view point and stick them on your conference badge
03:43:16 <mizmo> of course for the distro there would be one choice, fedora :)
03:44:36 <StabbyMc> mizmo: so a sheet similar to the speech bubbles
and (F) logos?
03:44:38 <inode0> the nametag stickers are handy
03:44:59 <mizmo> StabbyMc: it would be much smaller, and the stickers
would all be small and circular, really they're just little gems or
tokens for your conference badge
03:44:59 <inode0> where is herlo?
03:45:13 <inode0> he designed a really nice sheet similar to Red Hat's
03:45:17 <mizmo> StabbyMc: i think for name tags we're better off with
rolls than sheets
03:45:31 <mizmo> which is red hat's sheet?
03:45:42 <inode0> it has 6 case badge style stickers of various sorts
and one large logo sticker
03:45:55 <mizmo> ah
03:46:01 <StabbyMc> mizmo: from a production cost standpoint, but I
can grab 2 or 3 sheets on my way somewhere, if I take the whole roll,
it's likely to get lost :-(
03:46:04 <inode0> mizmo:
03:46:14 <mizmo> StabbyMc: ah that makes sense
03:46:21 <threethirty> mizmo: i like that idea, can we get some legal,
cc, gnu, and activist things in the mix so that i could properly
express myself :)
03:46:26 <mizmo> inode0: ah yeh
03:46:45 <mizmo> threethirty: yeh thats the thing, we'd need to
brainstorm on what the little merit badges would have on them
03:46:49 <StabbyMc> mizmo: want to hash out some details over grub tomorrow?
03:46:53 <mizmo> threethirty: and if we're using something like the CC
logo we need to get their okay
03:47:11 <mizmo> StabbyMc: so, i hate to do this - can you do Thursday instead?
03:47:11 <threethirty> mizmo: good point, the copy left symbol ?
03:47:21 <StabbyMc> mizmo: no prob.
03:47:24 <mizmo> StabbyMc: I may actually need to stay home tomorrow
as it turns out
03:47:28 <mizmo> StabbyMc: kk sweet
03:47:33 <StabbyMc> mizmo: oddly I eat in the same place, like everyday ;-)
03:47:47 <mizmo> threethirty: i dont know if anybody owns the copyleft
symbol, oddly I would hope no one if that makes esnse :)
03:48:26 <threethirty> mizmo: if anyone did i would assume its the FSF
and i cant see them being too upset
03:48:43 <mizmo> threethirty: i can talk to them about it
03:48:55 <inode0> I can see it, but I'd like to not see it
03:49:03 <StabbyMc> don't they have sticker sheets that one can use
and modify already?
03:49:13 <mizmo> if someone can take up the task of figuring out what
the different badges should be, i can do the sticker artwork for them
03:49:29 <mizmo> StabbyMc: i think they do
03:50:36 <threethirty> mizmo: i think the copyleft symbol is in the
public domain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Copyleft.svg
03:50:45 * inode0 thinks those sticker sheets would be sweet
03:50:45 <mizmo> threethirty: oh okay great
03:51:27 * makfinsky agrees with the sticker sheets.
03:51:44 <VileGent> sticker sheets + voice logo stickers
03:51:46 <makfinsky> er, I agree with inode0 re: sticker sheets.
03:53:45 <StabbyMc> Ok, so the items on our list are:
03:53:46 * inode0 suggests open floor until the top of the hour?!
03:54:06 <StabbyMc> cut voice (or Finity) logo vinyl stickers
03:54:10 <StabbyMc> sticker sheets
03:54:12 <StabbyMc> Hats
03:55:00 <inode0> I want more buttons
03:55:14 <StabbyMc> Buttons
03:55:16 <StabbyMc> Fatheads
03:55:33 <StabbyMc> Table banners, or cloths or whatever they are that
are on the front of the table.
03:55:45 <StabbyMc> did I miss anything else?
03:55:58 * inode0 is too tired to remember now :(
03:56:14 <threethirty> i think that was it
03:56:26 <makfinsky> This is apart/in addition to the usual - shirts, etc.?
03:56:38 <StabbyMc> makfinsky
03:56:48 <StabbyMc> Yes Tees, case badges, clings are all done deals
03:56:49 <inode0> the shirts will be taken care of ...
03:56:54 <makfinsky> Kool.
03:57:14 <StabbyMc> OK.
03:57:32 <StabbyMc> #topic Fedora North America semi-monthly meeting OPEN FLOOR
03:57:46 <inode0> StabbyMc: do you want to check on individual logo
stickers as well as the 6" sheets?
03:58:05 <inode0> I'm guessing the same place would make either
03:58:06 <StabbyMc> inode0: already sent quote requests for the individuals
03:58:26 <StabbyMc> but the materials used for the sheets would likely
be different (I think)
03:58:35 <inode0> wouldn't have to be
03:58:41 <EvilBob> What is a Fathead? Is that like a Paul BobbleHead?
03:58:43 <inode0> Red Hat's are vinyl
03:58:44 <StabbyMc> LIke the sheets we have now are paper, where as
the other stickers we were talking about were vinyl
03:59:03 <VileGent> FatHead.com
03:59:07 <StabbyMc> depends on what goes on the sticker sheets.
03:59:34 <inode0> StabbyMc: I'm asking about sticker sheets made of
the same stuff as the individual sticker
03:59:36 <StabbyMc> If it's like mizmo was talkinga bout with
different sayings or personality things to stick on yourself, I don't
want to spend a bunch of money on nice quality stickers.
03:59:49 <inode0> those are different
04:00:02 <inode0> look at the herlo link
04:00:04 <StabbyMc> I did.
04:00:13 <inode0> that is what I'm talking about
04:00:14 <StabbyMc> You and I should talk in #f-a later.
04:00:21 <inode0> ok
04:00:24 <threethirty> mizmo: should someone make a wikipage with a
grid for comming up with the canf bandge stickers?
04:01:05 * StabbyMc thinks threethirty just volunteered!
04:01:08 * ke4qqq is leaving
04:01:39 <threethirty> StabbyMc: if i knew how to create a page... i
would still try to rope someone else into it... i hate wikis
04:01:54 <StabbyMc> threethirty: everyone has to learn sometime ;-)
04:02:12 * StabbyMc shoves threethirty towards the wiki
04:02:16 <StabbyMc> oh, pardon me..
04:02:29 <threethirty> StabbyMc: it touched you last
04:02:34 * threethirty runs away
04:02:39 <StabbyMc> OK, open floor.
04:02:43 <StabbyMc> Bueller?
04:02:57 <StabbyMc> Bueller?
04:03:14 <StabbyMc> Bueller?
04:03:18 <threethirty> is there a templete for the wiki?
04:03:45 <StabbyMc> threethirty: I would say surf around to see if
there's a page similar and just snag it's format.
04:04:00 <threethirty> lol ok
04:04:00 <StabbyMc> But likely you're going to have to create your own
format for this item.
04:04:10 <StabbyMc> Meeting close in
04:04:11 <StabbyMc> 5
04:04:15 <makfinsky> I do have a question - I will be attending a few
events in DC, shmoocon, fose, and more. Its too late to work out
anything like a booth.
04:04:39 <makfinsky> Should I hand out stickers, shirts, etc and like
stuff while there?
04:04:55 <makfinsky> Sorry StabbyMc.
04:04:58 <StabbyMc> makfinsky: if you like and have it on hand.
04:05:13 <makfinsky> Kool, anyone have stuff they can send me?
04:05:14 <StabbyMc> VileGent, haven't you run some "unbooths" like that?
04:05:16 <makfinsky> :-D
04:05:21 <threethirty> makfinsky: load up a satchle with swag and roam
around... saves on booth costs :)
04:05:34 <StabbyMc> makfinsky: request an Ambassador Kit via traq
04:05:39 <threethirty> StabbyMc: lol unbooth, i dig it
04:05:41 <makfinsky> Ah, ok.
04:05:54 <VileGent> backpacks loaded
04:05:59 <makfinsky> I'll do that tomorrow, tired tonight.
04:06:17 <cwtucker> unboothing sounds great
04:06:31 <ke4qqq> makfinsky: don't be afraid to do a booth though
04:06:42 <ke4qqq> we have money for it in most cases
04:06:44 <makfinsky> I'll see about adding the events to the events
page as "unboothing".
04:06:59 <ke4qqq> and would love a presence at schmoocon
04:07:03 * EvilBob read "<StabbyMc> makfinsky: request an Ambassador
Kit via Iraq"
04:07:04 <StabbyMc> makfinsky: https://fedorahosted.org/famnarequests/
04:07:10 <EvilBob> that would fail
04:07:11 <makfinsky> ke4qqq: Too late to put a booth together, that
and I am traveling for the next 6 weeks.
04:07:35 <ke4qqq> makfinsky: you might get some help - other people
are relatively close by - like stickster_afk
04:07:39 <ke4qqq> you should post to the list
04:07:43 <ke4qqq> and see what the response is
04:07:51 <makfinsky> Good call ke4qqq, thanks.

Event: RPI Center for Open Source talk about Fedora
by Máirín Duffy
I just wanted to shout out that I'll be giving a talk about Fedora at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY on February 5. The
abstract for my talk is as follows:
"How to get involved in an open source Linux operating system: Fedora
"Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in
free and open source software. Fedora is always free for anyone to use,
modify, and distribute. It is built by people across the globe who work
together as an open community that welcomes anyone to join. Mairin
Duffy, an RPI CS alum from Red Hat, will talk about what makes Fedora
different from other Linux-based operating systems and how you can get
involved in Fedora."
The official talk announcement and description is on the Rensselaer
Center for Open Source website:
The Rensselaer Center for Open Source (RCOS) funds RPI students for
working on open source projects - and the talk will be taking place
during an RCOS meeting. We already have two RPI students in the Fedora
community, Rob Escriba and Ben Boeckel, but I'm hoping this will be a
good chance to motivate more to join us :) BTW RPI is my alma mater :)
I'm not sure how many will be attending yet; I'm waiting to hear back
from my contact there on how many to expect. I filled out a Fedora
events entry here:
