Mumbai, India Engg. Colleges interested in Fedora
by Ankit Jain | Kamyab
Hey All,
GREETINGS OF THE DAY!
Well, here is a little news, that is bright for us, a few Engg. Colleges in
Mumbai, are keenly interested in going ahead, and having at least 1 Full
Fledged Open Source Lab. ;)
And through my contacts, i went ahead and pushed Fedora for the setup,
currently the pipeline is at the "talks level", but is very optimistic.
We can look at a time frame of say the mid of may for the ball to be rolling
or even before that.
We will need the following during the setup phase:-
1. Complete setup guides, for novice users, which can be given to the
lab incharges, along with network install guides and setup disks / Images.
2. A technical support hand a place where they can post their queries
and interact.
3. And (only if required) someone who can actually go to these colleges
and help during the setup.
Post the setup of the labs, i expect there to be a requirement of say a
training programme for students, in these colleges, or maybe (please pardon
my ignorance) something like a fedora camp, or say a fedora centre for Open
Minds, etc. Be setup in these colleges... i'm not aware of such programs and
would request information from the mentors, on how to go about such a
scenario.
Hope fully this development will bring us closer to our common goal J.
With Best Regards,

NLUUG Filesystems & Storage (May 7th)
by Jeroen van Meeuwen
Hello,
I'm sending you this announcement because it's a very interesting event
organized by the Dutch UUG, on the subject of Filesystems & Storage,
with key people giving keynotes and sessions amongst which is the core
developer of ext4.
Kind regards,
Jeroen van Meeuwen

Every bit counts. From a single byte to billions of images, from one
line of text to a gigantic tangled semantic web of documents, from clay
tablets to 3D holographic memory, storage and the means to organize
storage have always been important to humanity. Never underestimate the
bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes, it was said; a sailboat
crossing the Atlantic still manages rates of a little over 1GB/s
end-to-end.
A petabyte of storage weighs about as much as a small car, but a large
physics experiment can fill that up in less than a week. The modern rate
of data production and amount of data storage --and crucially also data
search and retrieval-- have pushed the limits of computer storage and
the traditional file system further and further back.
The NLUUG Spring Conference 2009 focuses on storage and the means to
organise it: file systems, physical storage, connections and search.
The keynote speaker at the conference will be Ted Ts'o, author of the
ext4 file system in Linux and CTO of the Linux Foundation. Other
subjects at the conference are DRBD, desktop search and ZFS.
The conference is in conference center 'De Reehorst' in Ede, The
Netherlands. Information about the full programme and registration can
be found at the conference website:
http://www.nluug.nl/events/vj09/index.html
As always members of NLUUG and sister organisations as well as students
get a hefty discount.

An ambassador from Maldives
by Neo Reeves
Hi,
My name is Sameeh and I am a Fedora ambassador for Maldives. We are trying
to start a locally registered NGO which supports Open Source Software in the
Maldives. There is not much activity going on to bring OSS to the attention
of the public yet effectively.
No Fedora release parties, or other even for that matter...
Very few events had been held ages ago to promote Linux and Open Source
Can I have your recommendations and ideas to get the whole thing jump
started in a colourful way?
Thnx,
Sameeh

(08:08:19 PM) crossbytes: ?
(08:08:20 PM) ke4qqq: and I understand he is either traveling to or in raleigh
(08:08:30 PM) inode0: should be in raleigh
(08:09:05 PM) inode0: but unless there is other event business we are
ready to begin budget stuff
(08:09:38 PM) ***inode0 can report that jds2001 was pleased with the NYLUG event

have missed the event report jds2001
(08:10:30 PM) inode0: I haven't seen a report beyond a quick chat about it
(08:10:33 PM) ***ke4qqq has an event report in the hopper that'll
hopefully make it out tomorrow
(08:11:06 PM) inode0: ok, let's begin budget stuff
(08:11:21 PM) inode0: we have a number of things in the pipeline
(08:11:32 PM) inode0: dthomasdigital: want to start us off with case badges
(08:11:47 PM) dthomasdigital: Sure
(08:12:31 PM) dthomasdigital: I'm still working ion the artwork to
make sure it's official should be done tomorrow and will have it sent
to Duffy for approval
(08:12:57 PM) ke4qqq: what's cost??
(08:13:00 PM) herlo: dthomasdigital: I can help you with that if
needed, I am on the art team.
(08:13:01 PM) ke4qqq: and quantity?
(08:13:36 PM) dthomasdigital: herlo I'll take you up on that, I'll
send it to you first before I send it to Duffy
(08:14:29 PM) herlo: dthomasdigital: k, use your fedorapeople account,
that's what it's there for :)
(08:14:47 PM) herlo: dthomasdigital: tell ke4qqq how many :)
(08:14:55 PM) herlo: and how much
(08:15:22 PM) dthomasdigital: Cost is $455.00 for 500 $520.00 for
1000 Plus a one time set up fee of $95.00
(08:15:58 PM) inode0: did the bigger quantity quote come in? guessing
it didn't ...
(08:16:24 PM) ke4qqq: k
(08:16:28 PM) inode0: the marginal cost for the 2nd 500 is nothing
(08:16:33 PM) ke4qqq: yep
(08:16:38 PM) dthomasdigital: $600.00 for 1500 $680.00 for 2000
(08:16:38 PM) DemonJester: Are they glossed? (protective covering in
other words)
(08:16:40 PM) ke4qqq: I am curious how much even more are
(08:16:51 PM) dthomasdigital: Yes they are protected
(08:16:54 PM) inode0: since the initial cost is steep I'm leaning
toward going as big as we can
(08:17:19 PM) dthomasdigital: and these are aluminum
(08:17:27 PM) ke4qqq: thickness?
(08:17:27 PM) leitz: Once the initial cost is paid for the first
order, does it have to be redone for a second order?
(08:17:36 PM) DemonJester: 2000 is a pretty small order considering
they will be reusable.
(08:17:38 PM) dthomasdigital: No it's a one time fee
(08:17:49 PM) inode0: leitz: yes, but not the setup fee
(08:17:57 PM) herlo: DemonJester: reusable?
(08:18:01 PM) inode0: the cost of 500 more would likely still be $455
(08:18:07 PM) DemonJester: from release to release
(08:18:25 PM) DemonJester: herlo: ^^^^
(08:18:52 PM) inode0: we haven't decided how many at this point, but
I'd like to go as big as we can :)
(08:18:55 PM) ke4qqq: dthomasdigital: not to heep more work on you,
but find out what 5k costs
(08:19:09 PM) crossbytes: reusable? I think u answered my question..
from release to release
(08:19:10 PM) ke4qqq: if it's less than 1000 we should do that
(08:19:17 PM) herlo: DemonJester: ahh, okay
(08:19:18 PM) ke4qqq: IMO
(08:19:22 PM) DemonJester: inode0: I agree, I get requests for these
all of the time
(08:19:25 PM) inode0: looks like about $80/500
(08:19:55 PM) ***herlo wants some +1s for the 2000 in quantity ($680)
(08:20:26 PM) dthomasdigital: +1 and no problem getting a quote on 5000
(08:20:28 PM) DemonJester: +1 for the 2000@$680 but would like higher qty..
(08:20:30 PM) ***inode0 wants larger options but would +1 2000 if that
is my only choice
(08:20:38 PM) ke4qqq: I'll give you a +1 for 2000, provided he tries
for getting 5000 for 1000 bucks
(08:20:45 PM) crossbytes: +1
(08:20:50 PM) leitz: +1 for larger
(08:21:03 PM) lcafiero: I agree +1, but I'm also interested in a higher number.
(08:21:06 PM) ke4qqq: 5000 is nothing IMO - well burn that in no time
(08:21:16 PM) DemonJester: ke4qqq: I totally agree
(08:21:56 PM) dthomasdigital: Just sent an email requesting a quote
for 5000 units.
(08:21:56 PM) herlo: do we know how much those are?
(08:22:04 PM) herlo: dthomasdigital: add 10k too
(08:22:19 PM) inode0: we can't afford 10k I'm sure this quarter
(08:22:22 PM) dthomasdigital: herlo you read my mind
(08:22:38 PM) herlo: inode0: well, if I can't get the rest of the
stuff done before eoq we sure can
(08:22:44 PM) herlo: and I'm really struggling...
(08:22:54 PM) inode0: we have other items in the queue too
(08:22:58 PM) inode0: but ok
(08:23:08 PM) herlo: inode0: true, but I was looking to spend about $1k
(08:23:18 PM) herlo: not including media :)
(08:23:21 PM) inode0: since others aren't present let me discuss
tattoos and pens
(08:23:28 PM) leitz: on 10K, maybe split payment so we can see the
quality and the vendor gets an advantage.
(08:23:53 PM) inode0: tattoos are mostly ready to go pending art
approval - design is in place
(08:24:08 PM) DemonJester: link?
(08:24:10 PM) ke4qqq: they have TM mark?
(08:24:13 PM) ke4qqq: link?
(08:24:25 PM) inode0: basically powered by fedora tattoos changed to
be empowered by fedora
(08:24:55 PM) inode0: nicu provided art that is being modified to meet
necessary requirements
(08:25:52 PM) ke4qqq: while I really like nicus work, I also want to
see the art before we spend the money
(08:25:57 PM) ***inode0 looks for link
(08:26:26 PM) inode0:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-art-list/2009-April/pngSzYYTMEBc9.png
(08:27:06 PM) inode0: so the price on 5000 of these runs only in the
neighborhood of $300, I requested a quote for 10K on them
(08:27:09 PM) ke4qqq: no TM there...
(08:27:19 PM) lcameron_: +1 I like that
(08:27:20 PM) ke4qqq: but I like the design
(08:27:22 PM) inode0: ke4qqq: don't worry, this isn't final art - just
the design
(08:27:27 PM) ninjazjb_: looks good
(08:27:35 PM) lcafiero: This is for the tattoo?
(08:27:39 PM) inode0: yes
(08:27:41 PM) dthomasdigital: empowered by fedora slogan rules
(08:27:45 PM) ke4qqq: so two questions - is the white really going to be white?
(08:27:51 PM) ke4qqq: or just clear?
(08:27:58 PM) ke4qqq: and thats my two questions :)
(08:28:10 PM) ***DemonJester would prefer something more tribal but
that is because I already have a few of the real deal ;)
(08:28:18 PM) inode0: I don't know, nicu requested details and I
haven't heard back on them
(08:29:05 PM) inode0: but that can all be worked out - for the budget
I'm more concerned about pricing tonight
(08:29:30 PM) inode0: I see no problem approving the 5000 in any event
(08:29:39 PM) herlo: ke4qqq: clear
(08:30:05 PM) ***inode0 would not like the f to be clear
(08:30:06 PM) ke4qqq: well 1. I don't think that will cut it with logo
guidelines and 2. white is offered for free by most places
(08:30:16 PM) ***ke4qqq wouldn't wither
(08:30:19 PM) ke4qqq: either
(08:30:23 PM) ke4qqq: or the fedora name
(08:30:28 PM) inode0: nope
(08:30:32 PM) ***herlo thinks clear would be cool (except for the f)
(08:30:44 PM) herlo: and clear would work in that situation
(08:30:44 PM) ***lcafiero agrees with herlo
(08:31:12 PM) DemonJester: to be honest I think white would make it
look like nothing more than a sticker
(08:31:24 PM) dthomasdigital: My son just told me he's ready for his
fedora tattoo, (his 11) so they are all ready popular.
(08:31:37 PM) herlo: in fact, the tm might not even be a requirement
because 1) it wears off 2) it's so small, it'll smudge quickly and 3)
nobody will be able to tell what it is anyway
(08:31:45 PM) inode0: well, if we just used the fedora logo as
originally planned it would just look like a sticker too
(08:32:28 PM) ***herlo also argues that the stickers I was working on
a while back had the tm on the sticker paper, but wouldn't when
removed. mizmo was *ok* with that.
(08:32:43 PM) inode0: yes, that is fine
(08:32:55 PM) ke4qqq: herlo: mo gave us some options for getting
around it, and that wasn't one of them. - the absent when
applied/removed from paper worked ok with her
(08:33:13 PM) ninjazjb_: if there is no white, will the blue outline
smudge faster?
(08:33:48 PM) inode0: let's discuss this with davdunc later, he is
doing this and is not present here
(08:34:09 PM) herlo: ke4qqq: right
(08:34:15 PM) ***lcafiero has some of those stickers, I think. They're
about 3" in diameter, execpt for where it teardrops at the bottom?
(08:34:32 PM) ke4qqq: I have some of the FF tats
(08:34:34 PM) herlo: ke4qqq: the options for getting around the
stickers seems to apply to the tattoos...
(08:34:37 PM) ke4qqq: and iirc they are 2x2
(08:34:44 PM) ke4qqq: herlo: yep
(08:35:00 PM) herlo: k, the first part of your statement was confusing :/
(08:35:03 PM) ***inode0 doesn't care about the TM, if the TM police
want them we'll add them :)
(08:35:13 PM) herlo: right
(08:35:16 PM) herlo: +1
(08:35:16 PM) lcafiero: heh
(08:35:16 PM) inode0: we don't have a ruling now
(08:36:09 PM) ke4qqq: ok - well +1 for moving forward then
(08:36:11 PM) inode0: next are pens being investigated by several
people including maxamillion
(08:36:15 PM) lcafiero: +1
(08:36:44 PM) inode0: bic click stick pens with fedora branding on the
barrel and clip seem to run about $300/1000
(08:37:25 PM) inode0: thoughts or comments on pens?
(08:37:39 PM) ***jds2001 here, late
(08:37:47 PM) lcafiero: I just got back from the MySQL conference and
have about 50 pens. They're always useful.
(08:38:12 PM) jds2001: lcafiero: s/conference/funeral :(
(08:38:15 PM) ke4qqq: -1 to pens
(08:38:16 PM) lcafiero: I like the idea of Fedora pens
(08:38:32 PM) leitz: Pens--space out swag, Case badges this quarter,
maybe pens the next.
(08:38:39 PM) ke4qqq: I don't - I keep my fedora pen as a showpiece,
but don't use it.
(08:38:40 PM) ***lcafiero nods at jds2001 -- right, pretty somber event today.
(08:38:56 PM) lcameron_: I think pens are over done... I have tons of
promo pens from lan parties
(08:38:58 PM) ke4qqq: lcafiero: the postgres people seemed pretty happy :)
(08:39:05 PM) lcafiero: heh
(08:39:47 PM) inode0: well, case badges and stickers are overdone too
but that doesn't stop us
(08:40:06 PM) inode0: swag is limited
(08:40:16 PM) lcafiero: that may be lcameron_ but I think they're
still good to have available, imho
(08:40:22 PM) inode0: pens are one of the few sorts of swag that have
an actual use
(08:41:02 PM) ke4qqq: tshirts have a use
(08:41:07 PM) ke4qqq: stickres have a use
(08:41:12 PM) ke4qqq: pins have a use
(08:41:16 PM) ke4qqq: :)
(08:41:22 PM) inode0: ke4qqq: your objection to pens is what?
(08:41:42 PM) lcafiero: those stress balls in the shape of penguins
have a use (got some today)
(08:41:46 PM) ke4qqq: that they are overdone - that to be effective
they are always 'cheap'
(08:41:52 PM) inode0: tshirts fill drawers
(08:42:00 PM) ke4qqq: I wear fedora shirts all the time
(08:42:25 PM) inode0: I use pens all the time, I wear tshirts on occasion
(08:42:34 PM) ninjazjb_: mouse pads?
(08:43:03 PM) ke4qqq: I'd rather see us do hats than pens....but I'll
shut up now
(08:43:06 PM) inode0: I see a downside to pens
(08:43:15 PM) lcafiero: ooooh, hats.
(08:43:26 PM) inode0: they are gobbled up by anyone seeing them
(08:43:40 PM) dthomasdigital: I wear my linux journal hat all the time
(08:43:41 PM) lcafiero: <---- bald guys like him always need them
(08:43:51 PM) DemonJester: how about "New Era Fedora Hats"?
(08:44:02 PM) inode0: hats cost more than 30 cents too :)
(08:44:14 PM) ***herlo thinks hats are cost prohibitive
(08:44:18 PM) lcafiero: sigh . . . good point
(08:44:57 PM) leitz: Fewer hats but have business card drawings for them.
(08:44:57 PM) ke4qqq: can't imagine it's worse than tshirts, but far
more than 30cents
(08:45:12 PM) inode0: it is far worse than shits
(08:45:18 PM) inode0: bad typo
(08:45:19 PM) lcafiero: shirts
(08:45:24 PM) lcafiero: heh
(08:46:02 PM) inode0: well, maybe not in quantity
(08:46:35 PM) inode0: we priced some for the summit in the past and
they were prohibitive in small amounts
(08:46:55 PM) ke4qqq: so are shirts in small quantities, we had to hit
200 to get decent prices iirc
(08:46:56 PM) jds2001: inode0: what did the visors cost?
(08:47:11 PM) jds2001: there werent many of those iirc
(08:47:17 PM) inode0: jds2001: I'd have to try to remember
(08:47:30 PM) inode0: no, we switched to visors because we couldn't afford hats
(08:47:43 PM) DemonJester: ke4qqq: 270 shirts to get big discount
(08:47:51 PM) jds2001: and the embroiderly is ultra-simple
(08:48:17 PM) inode0: right ke4qqq, I'm agreeing hats might be doable
in that amount
(08:48:45 PM) lcameron_: what about bouncy balls? I got a few from
Bawls... they were different
(08:48:50 PM) inode0: but we are talking about $1K+ for 300 rather
than $300 for 1K
(08:49:50 PM) herlo: inode0: nice one, watch your language!
(08:49:55 PM) inode0: in any event, hearing objection we'll revisit pens later
(08:50:03 PM) lcafiero: +1
(08:50:08 PM) DemonJester: +1
(08:50:14 PM) lcameron_: +1
(08:50:23 PM) inode0: for now, we can focus on getting as many tattoos
and badges as we can swing
(08:51:04 PM) inode0: herlo: if you are available have any further
comment on banners?
(08:51:14 PM) lcafiero: actually, leitz's suggestion about spacing
swag is a good one.
(08:51:33 PM) inode0: next Q we will have big media bills
(08:51:51 PM) ***inode0 thinks we have more flexibility this Q
(08:53:36 PM) herlo: inode0: sure, I am here but semi-busy
(08:53:39 PM) herlo: I'll go fast
(08:54:05 PM) ***herlo is struggling with the banners being exported
to cmyk, but I think I got it yesterday. Once that's done, we should
have retractable banners ordered.
(08:54:12 PM) herlo: current target date for ordering is May 1
(08:54:28 PM) inode0: that sounds excellent
(08:54:33 PM) herlo: cost is about $300-450/banner depending on style
and strength
(08:54:47 PM) lcafiero: +1
(08:54:51 PM) herlo: but they fit in a 24" wide by 6" high roll-up
(08:55:01 PM) herlo: thus, they'll fit into the eventboxen
(08:55:01 PM) ***inode0 +1 to getting them as good as we can
(08:55:06 PM) ***ianweller waves
(08:55:26 PM) dthomasdigital: When do I need to start asking for
support for the event I have coming up in November (sorry to jump the
gun.)
(08:55:34 PM) inode0: next Q
(08:55:41 PM) dthomasdigital: cool
(08:55:50 PM) ***herlo points out that costs could be spread through 2
quarters if other items are ordered. I would guess there's going to
be a setup charge too, but it should be minimal
(08:55:56 PM) herlo: and then we can order more.
(08:56:14 PM) herlo: they're going to look like this:
http://herlo.fedorapeople.org/art/fedora_four_fs_vertical_banner_330x800.png
(08:56:49 PM) inode0: oh, so we could get one in Q1 and another in Q2
(08:56:58 PM) ***inode0 notes more flexibility
(08:57:06 PM) ***lcafiero hates that xchat makes him refer to himself
in the third person, but he likes the banners a lot
(08:57:40 PM) inode0: ok, I'd like to make a couple remarks to wrap this up
(08:57:53 PM) inode0: (1) herlo proceed and keep us posted
(08:57:59 PM) ke4qqq: on time?? surely you jest
(08:58:24 PM) herlo: inode0: yeah, 1 in q1, one in q2, maybe another in q3
(08:58:25 PM) inode0: (2) dthomasdigital get the bigger quotes and
we'll arrange to go as big as we can, and get art approval final
(08:59:05 PM) inode0: (3) inode0 will contact davdunc about tattoos
and see if we can up that to 10K and discuss transparency issues
(08:59:10 PM) herlo: ke4qqq: on time? Was that for me?
(08:59:21 PM) ke4qqq: no for inode0
lcafiero lcamero
(08:59:39 PM) inode0: Moving on from the general budget now to
lcafiero's new request
lcafiero lcamero
(08:59:45 PM) inode0: lcafiero: go ahead
(08:59:52 PM) lcafiero: the new request, and I'll be really quick.
(09:01:07 PM) lcafiero: A while back, there was discussion whether
$750 was enough for LFNW, and quaid and i crunched some numbers for
what is now two events -- a talk by quaid and me at Oregon State and
LFNW -- and we may go a little over the $750 budget.
(09:01:10 PM) lcafiero: Or we may not.
(09:02:02 PM) lcafiero: So what I wanted to ask that since the
possibility of needing more than $750 was addressed awhile back, if I
could have $1,000 allotted instead, with the proviso that any unspent
monies will be returned.
(09:02:26 PM) inode0: unspent monies aren't leaving :)
(09:02:58 PM) lcafiero: True that, inode0 -- what I mean is that we
spend $700, there's $50 for the quarter that's available for something
else.
(09:03:38 PM) lcafiero: I understand from quaid that the number $750
is etched in stone and if we go to $751 or higher, anything over that
won't be reimbursed.
(09:04:17 PM) ke4qqq: can we see you numbers that you've crunted?
(09:04:31 PM) ke4qqq: we have stone etching tool?
(09:04:43 PM) lcafiero: I kind of wish quaid was here because we had a
worksheet but I can't remember where it is. Let me look
(09:04:46 PM) ke4qqq: crunched
(09:05:51 PM) lcafiero: right. Looking now, but there was a range of
$560 and $820, I think.
(09:06:15 PM) lcafiero: Because I undershot on the budgeting, I would
have thrown in the $70 on my own.
(09:06:30 PM) lcafiero: $750 + 70 = $820
(09:07:48 PM) lcafiero: Rats. I can't find it.
(09:08:02 PM) inode0: are there any non-travel expenses here?
(09:08:16 PM) lcafiero: quaid, white courtesy phone
(09:08:42 PM) inode0: who owns LFNW?
(09:08:46 PM) lcafiero: no, there isn't.
(09:08:47 PM) lcafiero: me
(09:08:55 PM) lcafiero: I own LFNW.
(09:08:59 PM) inode0: ok
(09:09:18 PM) lcafiero: But it speaks also to the issue of people
closer to an event owning it, but I won't bring that up now.
(09:10:40 PM) lcafiero: in any case, I was hoping for a buffer, should
I go over $750.
(09:10:45 PM) ke4qqq: lcafiero: I don't have problem with more money -
but I want us to be transparent - can you put your projected costs up
on the wiki?
(09:10:56 PM) ke4qqq: doesn't have to be now
(09:11:07 PM) lcafiero: Quaid and I had made up a worksheet that for
some reason I can't find.
(09:11:30 PM) lcafiero: Transparency is good, but I can't provide that
(see above)
(09:11:38 PM) lcafiero: so I'll just withdraw the request.
(09:11:44 PM) ke4qqq: can you do it in the next week
(09:11:49 PM) ke4qqq: within the next week
(09:11:57 PM) lcafiero: I can probably do it tomorrow morning before we leave.
(09:12:04 PM) ke4qqq: or even after the fact
(09:12:06 PM) ke4qqq: is fine
(09:12:17 PM) inode0: lcafiero: yeah, even after the fact
(09:12:42 PM) ke4qqq: there are several reasons - one it helps us plan
next year, and two it makes us more transparent
(09:12:52 PM) lcafiero: Right.
(09:12:57 PM) ke4qqq: seeing that we spent 1700 dollars on OLF last
year doesn't tell us anything really
(09:13:00 PM) lcafiero: Bear in mind I'm pretty new at this.
(09:13:08 PM) inode0: right now we don't even understand what money is
being spent on
(09:13:10 PM) ke4qqq: knowing that we bought shirts and sponsored OLF does
(09:14:00 PM) lcafiero: In LFNW case, it's almost entirely on travel
expenses, as opposed to non-travel expenses (i.e., event items, etc.)
(09:14:27 PM) lcafiero: So what I'll do is post it on the wiki and on
the list for discussion.
(09:14:30 PM) ke4qqq: so forgive me, but how many people are traveling?
(09:14:33 PM) inode0: ok, consider yourself to have some coverage if
you go over - no one cares about that I don't believe
(09:14:42 PM) ke4qqq: no we aren't worried about that
(09:14:49 PM) ke4qqq: besides our stone etching tools havne't arrived yet
(09:14:56 PM) ke4qqq: so it's not big deal :)
(09:15:00 PM) lcafiero: I'm actually thinking we can keep it under $750
(09:15:16 PM) ke4qqq: but I do want to learn from what we are spending
- and globs don't help that
(09:15:28 PM) inode0: try, it helps to be as frugal as possible, but
don't worry if you go over a bit
(09:15:55 PM) lcafiero: How many are traveling? There's lodging for at
least 6, with some doubling up. It's on the worksheet that I can't
find at the moment
(09:16:04 PM) lcafiero: Then there's food, etc.
(09:16:25 PM) ***inode0 steps out for a couple minutes
(09:16:26 PM) ke4qqq: if 6 people can travel for 1000 bucks that's awesome!
(09:17:10 PM) crossbytes: ?
(09:17:15 PM) lcafiero: Kind of. I thought we could do it for less
(09:17:28 PM) lcafiero: but I could have underestimated.
(09:17:34 PM) lcafiero: ? to me crossbytes?
(09:17:39 PM) crossbytes: yes
(09:17:41 PM) lcafiero: shoot
(09:17:46 PM) ke4qqq: no worries there
(09:18:30 PM) crossbytes: this is going to be my first enent to attend
..so i do naot know what I should do when I get there..so will it be
wise for to go?
(09:18:41 PM) crossbytes: would this helkp with the expenses...?
(09:19:00 PM) crossbytes: sorry about the spelling..
(09:20:21 PM) crossbytes: my expenses food/travel/hotel would come to
about 85-90 round trip from Vancouver wa
(09:20:37 PM) ke4qqq: crossbytes: I'd rahter pay for you to go than quaid
(09:20:53 PM) inode0: we don't even pay for food for FUDcon people who
are sponsored?!
(09:20:56 PM) ke4qqq: you getting the experience is more important
(09:21:03 PM) ke4qqq: inode0: we do for some
(09:21:15 PM) inode0: Red Hat employees
(09:21:50 PM) warren: where is the next fudcon?
(09:21:56 PM) ke4qqq: no
(09:22:01 PM) ke4qqq: for some others as well
(09:22:05 PM) inode0: I don't think we know where it will be
(09:22:07 PM) ke4qqq: RH employees we technically don't fund
(09:22:15 PM) ke4qqq: warren: Berlin
(09:22:27 PM) inode0: they get per diem, others don't unless there are
special needs I don't believe
(09:22:29 PM) ke4qqq: and after that Brazil
(09:23:01 PM) ke4qqq: crossbytes: go, enjoy, and learn. Come back more effective
(09:23:08 PM) ke4qqq: don't worry about costs
(09:23:14 PM) ke4qqq: (within reason)
(09:23:22 PM) inode0: who are the 6 people getting lodging?
(09:25:07 PM) inode0: is there a room crossbytes could split with someone?
(09:27:02 PM) ke4qqq: inode0: iirc all are sharing a room
(09:27:09 PM) inode0: all who?
(09:27:14 PM) ke4qqq: all 6
(09:27:19 PM) crossbytes: the 85-90 includes room gas and food/ my
wife is attending also... must come to aid in driving just had
problems with my sciatica nerve
(09:27:23 PM) ke4qqq: who the 6 composed are I don't know
(09:28:18 PM) crossbytes:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LinuxFest_Northwest_%28LFNW%29_2009 for
who is attending
(09:29:01 PM) inode0: I don't know that who is attending and who is
getting a room funded by FAmNA is the same list though, that is what I
was asking.
(09:29:06 PM) lcafiero: sorry
(09:29:59 PM) lcafiero: hello?
(09:30:06 PM) inode0: we are all still here lcafiero
davdunc davej
(09:30:44 PM) lcafiero: I was worried about whether I was still here.
(09:30:55 PM) inode0: davdunc: are you still here because I'm ready to
move back to you rather than make you wait all night?
(09:31:08 PM) davdunc: inode0: present.
(09:31:19 PM) davdunc: thank you, but I made you wait.
(09:31:24 PM) inode0: Let's digress to move back to tattoos briefly to
get an update
davdunc davej
(09:31:41 PM) inode0: davdunc: fill us in on what you know
(09:32:11 PM) davdunc: thanks. Artwork is my problem. I have been
having a bit of difficulty getting someone to return the logo to me.
(09:33:07 PM) ke4qqq: davdunc: what logo do you need?
(09:33:14 PM) davdunc: Aztec (formerly Wolf's) Graphics has offered
me a discounted quote.
(09:33:23 PM) davdunc: Need the symbol.
(09:33:53 PM) inode0:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-art-list/2009-April/pngSzYYTMEBc9.png
(09:34:01 PM) inode0: is it still this one to be modified?
(09:35:23 PM) davdunc: that was sort of icing. I wanted to get the
symbol from the logo for the 1.5in square tattoo.
(09:35:44 PM) davdunc: that is 1.5inx2in.
(09:35:47 PM) inode0: so the standard infinity talk bubbly?
(09:35:53 PM) inode0: bubble
(09:35:53 PM) davdunc: yea.
(09:36:04 PM) inode0: that should be easy
(09:36:43 PM) davdunc: I thought so. I talked to Nicu and asked for
the Logo, he said to request it from logo@fedor... and that has been
a three week ordeal.
(09:37:18 PM) ke4qqq: davdunc: send me an email
(09:37:22 PM) ke4qqq: regarding that
(09:38:05 PM) davdunc: now I know that I have not been very pushy when
it come this, but I am not sure where I am overstepping my bounds. I
mean, I am a newb when it comes to projects in this group.
(09:38:08 PM) davdunc: will do.
(09:38:21 PM) davdunc: ke4qqq: I will send you an email. thanks.
(09:38:33 PM) inode0: can you fill us in on prices and quanitities?
(09:39:58 PM) davdunc: the quotes are rough. I haven't given anyone
artwork yet, only given them what I have without approval.
(09:40:20 PM) davdunc: so roughly $220 for 5,000 tattoos.
(09:41:20 PM) inode0: right, rough is good, no quote for 10K yet?
(09:41:36 PM) ***inode0 thinks we might want to go 10K
(09:42:01 PM) inode0: we had an earlier discussion about the empowered by design
(09:42:08 PM) ***leitz has a long drive tomorrow--see you all later.
(09:42:36 PM) inode0: everyone liked it but the white or the
transparency if that were transparent seemed not so popular
(09:43:39 PM) inode0: I think the standard logo might be better? What
do others think?
(09:44:34 PM) lcafiero: just the logo for a tattoo?
(09:44:40 PM) ninjazjb_: night guys
(09:44:47 PM) ke4qqq: I like the logo myself
(09:44:56 PM) lcafiero: same here
(09:44:58 PM) ke4qqq: but I am not really the tat wearing kind
(09:45:04 PM) lcafiero: with the f in white, right?
(09:45:10 PM) lcafiero: not transparent
(09:46:19 PM) ***inode0 thinks he prefers a regular talk bubble in the
normal colors
(09:46:25 PM) lcafiero: agreed
(09:48:04 PM) inode0: ok, I'll ask davdunc then to proceed with
getting quotes for 5k and 10k with the standard logo and we'll get it
done
(09:48:24 PM) davdunc: o.k.
(09:48:47 PM) davdunc: I have the logo now. I can move forward with
the purchase tomorrow.
(09:49:16 PM) davdunc: sorry. the quotes.
(09:49:25 PM) ke4qqq: davdunc: it's ok, be bold!
(09:49:32 PM) ke4qqq: assume we are going to reimburse you :)
(09:50:20 PM) ***lcafiero has to get going, to get ready to travel
tomorrow morning.
(09:50:24 PM) davdunc: thanks. ke4qqq
(09:50:26 PM) inode0: yeah, if it is under $500 for 10k I'd say just
order when you are ready
(09:50:55 PM) davdunc: O.k.
(09:50:57 PM) lcafiero: +1 on tattoos, and I'll even wear one
(09:51:33 PM) inode0: ok, open floor until the top of the hour if
anyone has anything more?
(09:51:37 PM) davdunc: awesome! will follow thorugh with purchase
provided the price is right, tomorrow morning.
(09:54:13 PM) inode0: hearing nothing shall we wrap?
(09:54:36 PM) davdunc: I have what I need.
(09:54:36 PM) inode0: hearing nothing inode0 wraps
(09:54:41 PM) inode0: 5
(09:54:42 PM) inode0: 4
(09:54:43 PM) inode0: 3
(09:54:45 PM) inode0: 2
(09:54:46 PM) inode0: 1

FAmNA Meeting Summary from 2009-04-21
by inode0
* Announcements
- LFNW is this weekend - Larry the Fedora Guy blogging starts tomorrow!
- DemonJester attended Barcamp Rochester this past Sat. with Karlie and
event report will be posted tomorrow
- dthomasdigital gave a presentation April 16, 2009 Las Cruces, NM -
Southwest Regional Technology Symposium
* Events [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents]
- No other reports
* Budget Review [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/NA/Budget]
- dthomasdigital gave us an update on Fedora branded case badges.
Some details regarding artwork still need to be resolved and pricing
for larger quantities is desired since we cross the pain point at 500
and then per piece cost is quite small. Update to follow when final
details are known.
- tattoos were discussed, both the "Empowered By" and standard logo
designs. We are in a similar position here needing to finalize artwork
and get a quote on larger volume. We hope to resolve these issues
quickly.
- Discussion of pens seemed controversial. Enough dissention that we
tabled pens for the time being to focus on things we all agree on.
- herlo updated us about banners, this is getting close to complete.
Details about when we can purchase and whether we'll spread it across
multiple quarters to follow soon.
- LFNW funding discussed. Flexibility given to event owner if they can't
quite meet the budget. Some concerns raised about our process in this
regard and we'll work on developing a more clear and transparent event
budget process in the future.
* Tasks [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/NA/Tasks]
- No report
* Open Floor
- No discussion items
I would again like to thank all the participants, especially the new
ambassadors joining us for the first time tonight.

FAmNA meeting tonight
by Larry Cafiero
Hi, all --
I've placed an item on the agenda tonight to ask for additional funds ($250,
to make it an even $1,000) for the Oregon State University/LinuxFest
Northwest event. The reason for the additional funds is to accommodate
additional lodging expenses brought about by the side trip to speak at
Oregon State on the way to LFNW.
I bring this up because I may be late for the meeting tonight -- hence, I
would appreciate if this could be a later item in the meeting and, in my
absence (if it comes up before I can get on the channel) Karsten Wade can
answer questions around this.
See you all tonight.

by Aveek Sen
Hi! Ambassadors,
> So, the work is:
> Can you please create a wiki page which will describe the mailing
> list etiquettes for Fedora? We want to make this a reference for

> please don't copy blindly.
I have completed the task. Please go through the Fedora wiki page and
send me the feedback. i will improvise on it after that.
