FOSDEM 2009
by Frederic Hornain
Dear *,
As I did last year, I am going to take in charge the organization of the
Fedora booth, Fedora Development
room<https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/FOSDEM/FOSDEM2009#Development...>and
so on for the FOSDEM 2009.
But, as that organization is going to be bigger and bigger each year and
following what I learned from previous editions I have decided to start it
as a project this month till the beginning of the event.
For you information, you could see the evolution of that project at the
following URL :
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/FOSDEM/FOSDEM2009
- To Gerold -
In addition, I did not forget you remarks from last years. So I am going to
take it in account for this edition. I am going to contact you the following
days about that.
Concretely, can we define the project charter with you, max, paul or someone
who could be in charge of that aspect ?
Let's hope you are always Ok to give me a hand.
Thanks a lot to all of you.
Feel free to contact me if you have any remarks.
Best regards
Frederic

NA Ambassador IRC meeting
by Matt McKenzie
Hello fellow NA Ambassadors,
I would like to discuss the possibility of changing the weekly IRC NA
Ambassador meeting to another day.
I was able to attend for a while recently, but that has changed now.
I have started band practice, which is Tuesday nights, which runs right into
the meeting time. Practice is 7pm-9pm PST, the IRC meeting starts and 6pm
PST and lasts until 7 or 8 depending, not to mention I get home at 5pm and
still need to eat dinner before practice. This is a community concert band,
both my wife and I are in it. I play French Horn and she plays Trombone.
Pretty much any other day of the week would work for me, same time slot is
OK (6pm PST, 9pm EST, 0100 UTC)
I spoke with ke4qqq and he also liked the idea of Wednesday evenings (6pm
Wednesday PST, 9pm Wednesday EST, 0100 Thursday UTC).
I don't want to inconvenience anyone else, but I also don't want to miss
these meetings.
If we don't change the meeting time I won't be able to attend.
So if any others would like (or wouldn't mind) and change in the time please
let's discuss it.
Again this is for the weekly North America IRC Ambassador meeting only.
Thanks!

Hi!
by Pablo Iranzo Gómez
Hi
My name is Pablo Iranzo, I live in Valencia, Spain and I'm work as
consultant on FOSS projects. I began using Linux in 1993 and more
seriously at university in 1995 and as sysadmin in 1997.
During my period at university I was a member of LinUV
(http://linuv.uv.es) and became a member of our local LUG: Valux
(www.valux.org).
At both LUGS I've helped giving talks about system administration,
utilities, guided installations, and FOSS in general as well as giving
advice / troubleshooting to the assistants that came to our party's
interested in the FOSS world.

NA Ambassadors Meeting 2008-08-27 Meeting Summary
by inode0
David Nalley led the meeting.
* News from FAmSCo - Jeffrey Tadlock, no meeting this week, budget is
nearing finalization.
* Current status of tasks
+ No progress made contacting existing ambassadors.
+ Potential sponsors for hardware to include in Event Boxes were
contacted this week. We hope to acquire small notebooks for each
event box. We will also attempt to acquire one XO for each box.
+ Plans to produce media for F10 proceeding, one or two runs of 3000
are possible.
+ FAD update and planning.
+ Planet aggregation continuing - some new ambassadors are on the planet.
+ Musts/Shoulds/Coulds - will try to get this out of draft in the next
week or two.
* The Education Strategy - Jack Aboutboul returned to discuss issues that
were raised on f-a-l and to further discuss the work he is doing in this
area. More discussion is expected.
* Dealing with News Media - Larry Cafiero introduced us to a draft he is
working on to help us more effectively deal with the media. This opened
a discussion of whether a policy is needed to guide ambassadors in
dealing with various media issues. Regardless of policy I think it is
fair to say the work Larry presented will be a great help to the many
ambassadors who may come in contact with the press in various situations.
I would again like to thank all the participants, especially the new
ambassadors joining us for the first time tonight.

Event Report: TechTrix '08
by susmit shannigrahi
Hi,
As I said on 29th, I had a talking event at a local engineering college.
As the day progressed, excitement grew.
It was morning when the organisers called us up and asked if they
could shift our talk to open stage. They were having space problem :)
No, we said. we are no bollywood stars..are we?
Around 10:30, we assembled. It was around 11:10 when we reached the college.
Upon entering the room we found that there was around ~100 students,
mostly from first and second year. Unfortunately, there was a power
cut as soon as we entered the room and though they had backup and
generators, they were unable to fix it.
Time was running and audience was getting bored, so we decided to
start without the microphone and projector.
First was the talk by Indranil Das Gupta, upon enquiring the audience
let us know, that they have heard of Linux in general, they have no
detailed idea but now that they have an opportunity want to know
specifically what Fedora and Linux was all about.
And there was the HOD of the Computer Sc. who wanted to know more
about Fedora as they were migrating a whole lab to Fedora.
Interestingly, a few students honestly confessed that they were here
because the tech fest was on and they had to come to it anyway. ;)
In the middle of talk, power came back and everything was back to normal.
After that there was my talk[1]. The audience was listening to it
carefully, they asked a few questions, and after the talk a few came
up to me and asked that they have already installed Fedora and they
were having such and such problems. As I didn't have much time, I told
them to follow it up with mail.
The scenario there is not much encouraging, as people never heard of
sourceforge and kernel et. al., but that give us a lot of opportunity
to teach them new things.
What I found, they have a LUG, had an install fest and then they had
no idea how to proceed.
So, I talked to them and asked them to make it a in a workshop format.
Probably, I shall go back there soon. :)
Next, Sayamindu from OLPC spoke, and demoed the sugar desktop, people
was entertained. Unfortunately, time ran out and he had to cut his
speech short. (He did a 2 hour presentation in ~20 minutes :D.)
So that was all about the event.
On our return leg, there was rain, so we had to walk a bit, cross a
bamboo bridge with toll tax....("bamboo bridge with a toll tax") and
went into the china town to have some nice...but that's a different
story. :)
Thanks.
