The original announcement[1] on the github blog says it can be done and
that the images can be rendered in-page. I also found a blog with an
example of how to address the images in markdown [2] since there isn't a
terrible amount of explicit help from github on the topic.
On the same topic, I came across a recent blog post that indicates that
they are in the process of removing support for uploading static files
via the web[3]. They offer some alternative suggestions[4].
